I am wondering if you failed to install the modules correctly. As a matter of practice, when I build a kernel, I use make bzlilo followed by make modules modules_install. Note that I keep 3 kernels in my /boot directory. One is a pristine kernel (and associated system.map). Make bzlilo backs up the current kernel on a successful build.
