[SuSE Linux] Incorrect System.map
Hi all, I was poking around my linux system and found this at the top of boot.msg in /var/log Inspecting /boot/System.map Symbol table has incorrect version number It doesn't seem to be harming the system just wondering what the hell it is! New kernel compiled and installed ? If you have more kernels with different version numbers, rename System.map to System.map-2.2.5 or whatever your old kernel version was and copy the System.map from /usr/src/linux to /boot/System.map-2.2.9 or whatever your new kernel version is. Compiled a new kernel and didn't copy the System.map to /boot?

Right, it doesn't matter. The system map is only used for disassembling kernel oopses.
Thanx

Hubert Mantel, What is going on here :) Are you taking a vacation from software development? Coming up for some air, and chatting with the happy SuSE users :) It's fun having so many answers (correct answers) so quickly. I guess it's just part of the SuSE nature!! No, it doesn't harm. Acutally, it does harm but only in case of a kernel panic. If you compile the kernel with "make zlilo" the make process should take care of copying the correct System.map over. I take you compiled a kernel and copied the new kernel manually ot /boot? When you make bzImage a new System.map file is put into /usr/src/linux. It as well as the kernel needs to be copied into /boot. Well, I say "need", I only figured this out last week and I've been rolling my own kernels for months! I think it's for debugging information if/when you ever see a kernel panic. As I've never seen one of those... -- Rachel -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
