ok I have found out that this printer can get the ipaddress via bootp. can i set this up on linux to server up the ip to the printer. info i found on hp's site also said you could setup via the front panel but not had any luck with that yet. thanks jack I'm wondering if anyone on the list here is using an hp4 printer with the onboard printserver in it. I can not find the manual on this machine, it was bought before my time. I need to get an ip address on it so that I can set it up on the linux server, its one the last stumbling blocks I have before i can convert over to linux an scrap the old novell server. thanks an any info you can give. jack malone Network Administrator EAST TEXAS LIGHTHOUSE FOR THE BLIND dba HORIZON INDUSTRIES 903-595-3444 http://www.horizonind.com

Yes. You need to install dhcpd - this handles DHCP and BOOTP requests. Once you've installed it, have a look at the relevant manpages for configuration.
