[SLE] Netscape Problem
Dear All I've encountered a Netscape 4.72 problem in SuSE 6.4 which I can't sort out. I've checked the SuSE database and there is a mention of a problem to do with Netscape and to use an earlier version. But the description of the fault doesn't exactly match my own bug. Can't find this in Debian, Red Hat 6.1/6.2 or Open Linux eDesktop 2.4 so I have to think that it only happens in the 6.4 version (to my certain knowledge) When I start Netscape Messenger and click on check mail I find that it asks me for the password. As it should. When I put the password in and click on OK Netscape drops off the screen and I have to re-start it. Does anyone know what this might be about ?? I've had a good look round for error messages but nothing doing. Have you added the patch that's on the SuSE website??? Gerry On Sat, 29 Apr 2000, Richard wrote:

Hello Richard, I had exactly the same problems, but after a while of try-out if found out the following : I seems to occure when one of your mail-settings are incorrect (for example i had put IMAP, and my provider didn't support this) or when you put an incorrect password. Once the password has been accepted, the problem doesn't re-occure anymore. You not the only one, i've heard allready 3 people experiencing the same problem. My advice, check and double-check your settings, be sure it's the right password... Kind Regards, Franky.

I wouldn't like to be rude but perhaps I might be allowed to ask the following question ????? Why are we promoting Microsoft tech support methods on this list ????? I used to do call centre tech support for a job and the usual thing is that you are told (whilst you are working) is that you *will* lie to make sure that only MS can be seen to be a software manufacturer. Why should I support them ? Thank you for your advice :-)) -- Richard Sheffield UK -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Richard, What i forgot to say : there is a new Netscape on the updates for 6.4, perhaps the problem is solved there. Franky. Richard wrote:

Franky, I had the problem with IMAP 4 and my server does support IMAP 4. I found that when I told the client to put its sent mail on the server the crashing stopped, but the sent mail gets lost in the bit bucket. I also have a problem that sorting my mail by subject or sender deterministically crashes the client. In addition I have a problem connecting to an SSL protected news server which requires an x509 certificate for authentication. The strange thing is that I don't have the same results on two different 6.4 systems. It seems the sorting problem is on both systems, but the crash when retrieving mail and the news server authentication problems never presented themselves on one of my systems. Just downloaded nsfix.rpm and xshared.rpm. That fixed the problem that I had with Netscape :-) Thanks -- Richard Sheffield UK -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Found errors trying to install the fix until I realised "metamail" is required (/usr/bin/mimencode is a dependency). On Sun, 30 Apr 2000, Richard wrote:
