[opensuse] attachments in thunderbird 9
Hi everyone, I am using thunderbird 9 on my office pc, opensuse 12.1 32 bit. I get attachments with emails, and in particular the pdf attachments are what are causing a problem. I want to open pdf attachments with okular, but when click to open the attachment, my only option is to open with GIMP. the dialog box does not allow me to choose another application besides GIMP, which is the default. How do I configure thunderbird so that I can choose the application to open, or else set pdf files to open with okular? Of course pdf files when opened from dolphin or anywhere else will open with okular. I was able to configure thunderbird on my home pc to open attachments with okular, but I can't remember how I did it. Now I am stuck, and searching the forums doesn't yield any help. The mimeedit extension for thunderbird seemed to work for some people before, but that extension has been removed from thunderbird options. For some reason, Edit/Preferences/Attachments has absolutely nothing listed. There are no options for any kind of files. The table on that tab is blank in both columns, and there is no dialog button to add anything to the table. On my dialog screen for attachments, the table is blank. How do I a file type to the content type column on the attachments? There is no way to make a new entry. I assume that there is some way, but it isn't showing up on my screen. This is actually a common problem, as I search the internet and see that many others have had the same problem, only having gimp available to open pdf files. There is no need to manually add an entry in the table. The entries are made the first time a particular file with a given extension not defined in "System Settings--->File Associations" For example, send yourself a file with a weird extension, xxx.ase3, for example. When the email arrives you should see a the attachment name on the left side of the preview pane and a > character just to the left. Click on that and it will be expanded. Double click on that attachment name and you'll get a dialog box where you can assign the application to handle the file. Checking the "Do this automatically...." box will then add that action to the table. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Sorry, that should have been.... "Personal Settings--->File Associations".... Remember, there are 2 ways to define what applications are used. By MIME type and file extension.... Anyway, if you search for pdf in File Associations you would/could find that the choices are set to Okular and GIMP with Okular being at the top. If you don't have Okular installed...but have GIMP installed....it will be called. You can make changes here as well as in Thunderbird.

I need to mention here that I've since gone to a "clean" system (one that I'd not modified) as opposed to my work system that was tailored a while ago. There I discovered what I would see as an "abnormality". The "File Associations" does have Okular at the top and Okular is installed as is GIMP. I would have thought this would start Okular but it starts GIMP. To change the behavior I had to do it in Thunderbird itself by expanding the attachment (>) as I mentioned before and picking "Other" and then navigating to /usr/bin/okular and selecting "Do this automatically..." I must have done this a long time ago and just forgot about it.... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

That did the trick! Funny thing is, I had tried that before, but the "Other" option choice on opening the attachment never showed up before. For some reason it was always just "Gimp", and there was no "other" option. When I did it this time, the "other" option showed up. I might also mention that in previous versions troubleshooting this problem included deleting the "mimeTypes.rdf" file under the folder ~/.thunderbird/<profilename>.default/. I guess in thunderbird 9 they are not longer using the "mimeTypes.rdf" file, because it doesn't seem to exist on my system. Thanks for helping me get that solved, as that will save a lot of time at work now.
