Hi Malcolm,
Sorry, but your report is a bit chaotic - I'm trying to make some sense of it, but let's see
My desktop seems to have crashed.
So it does not boot anymore?
The standard boot screen does not appear now. I have had this problem for a few weeks now. The current boot screen shows opensuse 11.0 which will boot. Earlier sdb showed as well but if I chose sdb it came up with the sda 11.0 The reason that I know it was the sda 11.0 was because the email came up which was only used on the sda disk. The current boot screen shows opensuse 11.0 which runs from sda if I click on It. Also shown are: Failsafe 11.0 Floppy Installation Memory Test
The failsafe starts but stops saying "kernel panic" Installation does not work. Memory test does not work.
I am unable to install.
Or is it only when you try to install?
There are 2 disks but only sda can be run which shows on the list when I switch on.
Are there two *physical* harddisks connected? Has it been like that from the very beginning, or have you added a disk? If so, when?
Which 'list' are you talking of when switching on? And what do you mean with 'can be run'?
Both disks were in the box when I bought it.
As far as I can remember all I had to do was put a Suse disk in and install Suse.
So what exactly happens when you try to do that? Please step-by-step discribe what you are doing (selecting menu entries, perssing buttons etc.)
If I just put a dvd into the tray and close the tray a window appears and I can open the dvd as normal. Because Installation in the boot screen does not work I can not just format both hard drives and re-install suse.
What would be a wonderful reply would be a simple way of deleting Suse 11.0 on sda and deleting sdb and then just be able to install.
Why do you want to 'delete' sdb? You mean formating it? Or not having it in the system? For the latter, disconnect it...
Pit
As I have been fiddling with the box over the last few weeks and the Installation does not work I am hoping that someone will be able to tell me how to just clear everything and start from the beginning again. The only thing to save would be the Suse mail.
As I have been trying to sort out the problem I could have made the problem worse.
Thanks for your help, Peter.

Hmm, a problem with the boot loader install?
Also shown are: Failsafe 11.0 Floppy Installation Memory Test
Huh, strange setup for a normal bootscreen. Is this booting from your harddisk, or do you have an install-DVD in the drive? If it's the install DVD, and install doesn't work: Are you sure the DVD is intact? If it's really only the harddisk: Boot from the DVD. In doubt check in the BIOS that it first tries the DVD. From there, install should work. Newer Suse-DVDs have an entry 'fix installed system' if the bootloader is messed up - not sure if 11.0 already had that. You might also boot the rescue system from DVD and try to fix the bootloader - but there you definitely need more help which I cannot really give...

So the sda installation is working normally. Your problem is you cannot boot the sdb system? What is installed there, how and when was it installed?
Because Installation in the boot screen does not work I can not just format both hard drives and re-install suse.
As said above, 'Install' is normally done from a DVD, not from the normal harddisk. Make sure you have a flawless install DVD and try to install from that.

Well, if you can still boot the system you should be able to access it and save it somewhere? Or is it on sdb? Have you tried mounting sdb?

Might be. Have you changed things in /boot/grub/? Pit -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hello Carlos,
It boots without a dvd in the tray.
Well, you have done something very weird, you have an "installation" entry there which is very, very, weird. I can not even guess what you have and thus I can not offer advice. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
