SUSE 9.2 Installs With Little RAM
Someone previously mentioned having read that SUSE 9.2 would not install on anything less than 256 MB of RAM. I just wanted to let folks know (who may not) that I have installed it on a box with a measley 192 MB of RAM. The HP Vectras (P-II 450MHz/192MB RAM) will get KDE only. These are a tad slow, but actually handle 9.2 better than I expected. If you're worried about your CPU/RAM capabilities - you can relax. http://www.suse.de/en/private/products/suse_linux/prof/sysreqs.html Minimum 128MB, 256MB recommended It's usually possible to get below even the "minimum" by enabling swap early enough in the installation process

It might also have been talking about the 9.2 Live Eval CD as it won't work with less than 256MB. It told me so when I tried to run it on a machine with less! ;o) Lee

Well, it spooked me to think I wouldn't be able to install 9.2. I did get pointed to the correct link (I had missed it initially) on the 9.2 pre-release page, that gave 128MB as the minimum. After seeing the post about less than 256 MB, I was a bit nervous - the HP Vectras only have 192 MB at most. I didn't realize that the post could have been referring specifically to the live eval CD. What about Gnome? I am using it because evolution is too slow under KDE on this PII 350 with 256mb. -- cwsiv <cwsiv@juno.com> Linuxmail
I think the 128MB requirement is for the Yast2 graphical installer. I haven't seen Yast2 graphical installer run automatically on boxen with less than 128mb on 9.1 - I guess it's probably the same thing. -- Kind regards Hans du Plooy Newington Consulting Services hansdp at newingtoncs dot co dot za

I have a laptop PII-333 with 64M and the graphical installer (9.1) did not start, with a few Meg of swap, it's still slow, especially after a sleep when it suddenly fires off updatedb and is totally unresponsive until that's done. Looks like 9.2 could be a long process. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer =====LINUX ONLY USED HERE=====
