[opensuse] Can not boot OpenSUSE 11.1 - crc error - System halted?
Hi, have HP DC7800 PC with BlueRay and two 1,5TB disks. Until recent update system was ok running suse 11.1. After update can not boot, get crc error. Reinstalled system and did update - same error. How can I solve this error. Kernel 2.6.27.21-0.1. Audrius -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Rats, the crystal ball has stopped working again. :-) Try giving us more info: 32 or 64 bit install what extra packages installed if any what was updated Could be a failing memory with a bad spot somewhere, try running memtest overnight. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
And when I use repair - File system check I get: -executing file system check for partition /dev/sda2... /dev/sda2 contains no valid Ext3 file system But how!?! I just installed system and formated all partitions? Just reinstalled system and no update - system boots and works OK. Could it be related to new kernel and big disks like I have (1,5TB)? Or some ext3 module? Or...? Now I have working system and can provide any info you need... I think will try to update all packages except kernel... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yep! If I update everything except kernel all is ok. When I updated kernel I get crc error... I updated to 2-6.27.21-0.1. Definitely there is something wrong with that kernel... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Maybe run from console smoltSendProfile first. It is easier to give a link to smolts server then to dig all information. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks. Can you post exact error? There are many. I guess that problem is with hard disks, as you mentioned, but it could be easily hardware problem that did not appear in previous kernel. Have you tried to detach for instance DVD, or one of hard disks. It is sometimes easier to find what software module is bad playing a bit with devices. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Changed HDD to 500GB, same error. Exact error is: "root (hd0,0) Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83 kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27.21-0.1-default root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST3500630AS_6QG3V0K6-part1 splash=silent [Linux-bzImage, setup=0x3000, size=0x268480] initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.27.21-0.1-default [Linux-initrd @ 0x37a45000, 0x5aace8 bytes] Probing EDD (edd=off to disable)... ok crc error -- System halted" Strange thing... Anything new? I noticed that you have crc error in the same place my system is stopping with message about unsupported video mode. In my case it is enough to press space bar and it will continue booting. Another coincidence is that you have Nvidia graphic card (smolt). Mine is FX5200 PCI and it worked fine until recently. So, the problem could be video driver. I'll try to check that, by recompiling mine, and see is it any better. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No, it is not video driver. -- Regards, Rajko http://news.opensuse.org/category/people-of-opensuse/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Try replacing the cable. CRC error on a HD means very bad error. If different disk gives same error, I'd suspect the motherboard, or perhaps cable. Software :-? Dunno, only if software makes wrong check. I'm assuming it is a HD CRC error, of course, message is not verbose enough. Try that "edd=off" it suggests. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Hi, thank you all for answers. First of all I downloaded new Fedora and get same error. So I started to check hardware... and get memory errors... So at the moment my HP PC is at service... I will inform when I get PC back and install suse. Again, this list is incredible, thank you guys!
