I used to have the same card as you do. Suse erroneously told me that the card is supported. I found out that you can make the card work by manually configuring it. You would have to choose for example GENDAC for the dac. I did this through trial and error. I do not know the exact configuration.
There is though an alternative. You can try from xig.com their x-server and see if it works for suse 7.1 and above. It will run on suse up to 7.0. I have used xig's server with 6.4 and was very happy with it.
I am attaching the support file below that i recently recieved from them for your review.
good luck and if i get mine to work this weekend i'll let you know

Harry, SuSE 7.2 isn't currently officially supported by any of our servers/drivers. However, it may work. At a minimum, you'll probably have to create a libtermcap.so.2 link that points to the version of libncurses that SuSE 7.2 uses before our server will run on it (because SuSE 7.2 doesn't ship with a libtermcap). The 3Dfx 3500TV isn't supported by the new beta, but the VX1 is. I would recommend trying the free beta 2.0 LGD on your VX1 to make sure it works to your satisfaction on SuSE 7.2. If it does, you can unlock the beta with your 1.1 license key. Sincerely, Bryan

a whole back i purchased your lgd for my 3dlabs vx1 card i have since replaced it with the 3dfx3500tv.
my system is amdk63 450 256 meg ram suse 7.2
i was thinking of putting back my vx1 card back because i am havng certain issues with my 3dfx. i have also noticed that you have a beta version of your new server and that my vx1 is supported but not my 3dfx.
I have also noticed that no mention of support for suse 7.2
i would like to know which version of your x server is or is not supported by my suse 7.2.
and i would also like to know if my 3dfx 3500tv card is supported by the new beta server.
please advise
thanks

Hello,
Well, I am still trying to get Suse 7.1 to properly configure my 3DLabs VX1 graphics card. It told me there was no driver for XFree86 4.0 so I switched from SaX2 to SaX. I made progress with it and it then told me I needed to install the xglint package. So I went back to YaST2 and being in a hurry I just selected install all packages. So after 5 CDs and about 4 hours it installed "all" 1437 or so packages.
When I went back to SaX, I was suprised when SaX told me the xglint package was not installed! So when does install all packages mean all and not everything but xglint, and who knows what else.
After manually searching for and installing xglint I made further progress, but the X server failed to start with an eror message to the effect that there was no DISPLAY defined. I know I selected the display tab and defined the correct monitor I had.
Any idea what I need to do?
Also, it is disappointing that at 1800x1200 resolution the "generic" driver will only support 8 bits of color for this card!!!
Thanks for all for your input.
Babu
