If you start mplayer from a console, most probably you will see that it fails because it can not get access to the sound device. The first user logged in gets the rights. There were some discussions in the list about how to set the permissions of the devices, when a user logs in. I tried site:lists.suse.com Permissions Devices and got back a BUNCH of emails! this also fixed another problem I had, with my USB camera not showing up. I createda mount point, mounted /dev/sdb1 and now I have my camera back!! but no luck with the mplayer issue (yet)..
