[opensuse] Scanning via network
I"m trying to help a friedn set up his computer on 10.2. He has a Canon MP600R printer, scanner, kitchen sink. It's set up as a network device, and connected to his router. We've setup network printing (using the Canon 4200 driver) and it works perfectly. The next step is the scanner. It is also a network device. I know the IP address of the scanner/printer (used it to configure the printer) but...... I don"t really know how to set up the scanner as a network device. The YAST scanner setup has an option to enable or use a network scanner, but it seems to be expecting a scanner daemon running on another server.... whatever the Canon scanner is doing, it seems that it isn't providing the right answer back... Has anyone else played with network scanners? and maybe got the scanner on the Canon MP600R working? Yes, but I am afraid, they are from HP. But they work, especially the HP kitchen sink devices. and maybe got the

No. Anyway, either Canon supplies a driver for network scanning (like HP does) or you find a possibility to connect the device locally to a computer (most probably via usb), make scanning working there with sane and finally use sane via the network. Kind regards Eberhard

I found and installed the official Canon Linux software driver for the scanner component... sadly, it ONLY supports USB scanning.. not network scanning... Looks like we are out of luck here... :-( C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

C. If you can get it to work with sane then there is a network access daemon (saned) that will work with Linux. This can be setup via YaST. Unfortunately I do not know whether this will work with windows clients. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well, there will be no Windows clients in the set up once we're done upgrading the operating systems from XP. This will eventually be a complete SUSE home network. It looks like (unless I've missed something) that the network capable printer/scanner can only work as a network printer (this is easily supported in SUSE suing the Linux driver from Canon). The network scanning is out (even with Canon's Linux scanner driver.. this driver only does USB). We will have to rearrange the office so that the Canon printer/scanner is near one of the computers, and connect it to the USB port of that computer... and try network scanning that way (using saned). C. I have worked with similar setups before - sane on Linux, and a Sane windows client connects to the Linux box. Take a look at http://forums.fedoraforum.org/archive/index.php/t-639.html
