(first at all, sorry by poor english... babel fish was used. Brazilians? Helps me with this please) I had bad experiences with the combination reiserfs and SuSE 9.0 I'm running reiserfs, before with SuSE 8.1, 8.2 on several pc's. And now, with 9.0, we have many problems !!! I change hdds and use hdds from different manufacturers. If the pc's "crash" the errors "Give password to login" occours.. Partitions /home (/dev/hda5) is corrupted and reiserfsck --rebuild-tree is solicited. I search in web about this problem e found similar questions, bu without solutions (they always think that we have a hardware problem, memory problems.. etc..) Hardware problems? I do not believe (many pc's have same problems after upgrade) Reiserfs with Suse 8.2 had no problems. Only after upgrade this problem had become more frequent. There is a known bug? This already be done... The problem is temporary resolved, however if the PC crash again, the same error occurs, to all machines, almost daily.... *** And this is NOT a hardware problem *** Why I know this? Because all machines (more than 50 workstations) have this problem after upgrade to Suse 9.0 And the same worktations, with Suse 8.2, are worked perfectly ! Errors occur with new or old machines, new hdds, old hdds, first instalation or not I'm really very worried about this. Rejaine da Silveira Monteiro Tecnologia da Informação www.jamef.com.br

Rejaine da Silveira Monteiro Tecnologia da Informação www.jamef.com.br Rejaine, I'm afraid you wont see much on your complaint on this maillist. Most of the responses I have seen defend the Reiser system. I have had several different computers with similar problems especially after a power glitch. My solution was to run the Rescue system and do the reiserfsck --rebuildtree option.
I'm seriously considering on my next install to use ext3 exclusively til this problem is sorted out. Have you had any power glitches lately that may have caused the problem? My solution to that is an UPS to guard agains such a thing. A surge thingie will not do much good for power drops. Richard -- Old age ain't for Sissies!

Hi Rejaine, Did you upgraded the system or re-formatted when moving from suse 8.x to 9.0? I also have a suse 9.0 system (clean install) with the same kernel, but my reiserfs package has a different number after the dash: reiserfs-3.6.9-37 I checked ftp.suse.com and this is it. I don't know why yours is different. Mistyped? May be there's a place where they list the changes from one version to another.... It would be nice. I had some unexpected power failures, and the server always went back without additional intervention... (of course there were replayed logs and etc) Perhaps your /etc/fstab is with wrong parameters... Mine have entries like this: /dev/hda2 / reiserfs defaults 1 1 /dev/hda3 /var reiserfs defaults 1 2 (...) About six months ago, on this list, there was a problem reported about 9.0 and Reiserfs causing computers to lockup. Someone recommended switching to one of the other journaling file systems. I'd been having the problem and switched to XFS. That seemed to help me although I made some hardware changes at the same time. Rich -- Rich Matson Reno, Nv. USA
Hi, Problem solved! (special thanks to Marcos Lazarini for the tips) I don't know why, but my reiserfs package from the original DVD has a different version from ftp.suse.com The DVD was generated on 2003/09/24 and the ftp on 2003/10/03 The reiserfs package on my DVD is reiserfs-3.6.9-33 and on the ftp package is reiserfs-3.6.9-37. I checked ftp.suse.com and not only my reiserfs is older - others packages have differences too... And more, the update repository from Suse doesn't have patches or updates for my DVD packages... It's very very strange.... (bad Suse support ?!?!?) Anyway, I downloaded all the ftp repository and reinstalled my system... After that, seems like the problems have reduced... (I hope) Thanks all!
