Re: [SuSE Linux] SuSE has updated boxed 6.1 set 2.2.5 -> 2.2.7

Debian had this debate, RedHat had this debate, Sun with Solaris had this debate, now we have this debate. All make the same: If you have sold all CDs, you have to make new one. You could use the old master, or you could create a new one with the importanst bug fixes. If we would make a new versionnumber for it every time, a lot of people would be very angry, for example the reseller. Nobody will buy 6.1, if there is a 6.1.1 or 6.1a. If 6.1 was so bad that it wasn't useable, it is Ok. But not in this case. All of them had make the decision to not change the version Number. We too. I checked 3 mirrors yesterday. They ALL said go to ftp.suse.com for 6.1. Also, I find it somewhat arrogant of you to merely point us to the 6.1 directory without any way to tell (without a great deal of work) what has changed from the original release, You keep saying Red Hat does the same thing. BS. The last time I got a Red Hat release with a mid release change there was indeed a sticker on it telling what had changed. Also, they set up directories with the changes and reasons for them listed and links to get them individually. <A HREF="http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/errata.html"><A HREF="http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/errata.html</A">http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/errata.html</A</A>> to see how it's done right. When I just clicked on updates at your web page there is NO mention of 6.1. I'm not saying you have to get so elaborate, just give us the information. Can't you see the difference? Instead of getting pissed off and defensive, listen to our complaints and try to understand why we're upset. I like SuSE, otherwise I'd just shut up and leave. -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>

Yes, I agree, both our web pages and the ftp server should be updated more regularly. For both areas there are/will be changes, AFAIK, with a new layout, new organization, much nicer than now. About the changes, I don't know what's changed, sorry. I install most of the stuff without looking at any version numbers. Thorsten, A minor point my friend .. as far as Solaris is concerned. Sun always puts a sticker on their boxes denoting what release it is .. such as the release of 2.6 that I have is the 5/98 release which is sometime after the first release of 2.6. I am also fairly sure that they post these things on their site. Sun just released an updated Solaris 7 which came with a cd that included an updated Netscape that was for 7 instead of for 2.5.1 and up. They do let their customers know what the version #'s are because they have to support corperate clients that won't take car analogies and the confusion that comes with not knowing what you possess.. and FYI even the $20.00 developer edition came with support, so even though one was just paying for media .. you still got support. :) It's not a major point .. so no worries.. and just for the record I am not making a personal attack. I have worked some years with Sun Solaris. And I have seen packages, where you couldn't see which release exactly it was, and which patches are added. Thorsten, *grin* Point taken. I have only been around Solaris from a non-enduser prospective for about 2 years .. so I am not sure about before that ... I was just an end user then. An yeah, I know about life before Linux .. ahhhh .. the days of working on NeXT are still fond memories for me :) No worries ;-)

Use the old master, or create a new version number; it's your choice, and yes, you do get the choice of angry users or angry resellers. But remember, resellers aren't worth much of users stop buying the product from them.

Not a good answer, unless you post the differences between them, and WHY. But my guess is that you don't even know why you included differences, except that they were available. And although that's the only reason I've seen anyone from SuSE post here, that's never a good reason. And you need to leave the old ones, too. Otherwise I could easily take just one file that wouldn't work in my system, never know why, and simply become a non-user in disgust.

Another possibility is that the latest packages are included because the majority of customers ask for it. Of course then the packaging should make reference to the differences (maybe SuSE 6.1/2.2.7, or 6.1A) but upgrading because so many users insist on the latest (even if not greatest) is not equivilent to updating for no reason. There has been much more traffic on this list asking why the latest isn't incorporated as soon as it is available than there has been saying don't change a thing until the next version. Maybe they are listening to the majority of their customers. It is up to SuSE to determine which of these update paths they choose to follow and up to us to decide which distribution or OS we choose to use for our particular needs. As long as I have a choice I have a hard time getting excited either way. Allen Jeff Lasman wrote:
