[opensuse] Kernel rebuild howto
Hello! Can anyone on the list point me to a nice howto for rebuilding and optimizing the suse kernels, specifically the kernel with opensuse 10.1 or Can anyone tell me how to get opensuse 10.1 to pull in the 10.2 kernel? http://www.digitalhermit.com/linux/Kernel-Build-HOWTO.html Prior to the overall deteriorization of Suse... the boxed set used to contain an Administration guide which discussed the kernel rebuild in chapter (8) eight... see the Admin book Suse Professional 9.2 or 9.3. Anyway, the Suse reference manual on the 10.0 DVD has no such chapter... almost like Suse wants to discourage its users from rebuilding the kernel. Neither here nor there... you can find a very good write-up in the O'Reilly book "Running Linux" by Dalheimer & Welsh... 5th ed. see Chapter 18. Almost any Linux manual will contain a chapter on building the kernel--- some of them more detailed than others. What do you mean by "optimizing"? The answer to this question depends entirely on what you want your new kernel do for you, how compact you want it, whether you want hardware support strictly compiled in (or dynamically linked via modules), which processor you use, whether you need SMP, which specific hardware you need support for, and a host of other questions that generally go beyond the scope of most of the howto's and articles. If you are compiling the kernel for the first time I would recommend that you start with the default kernel config that ships with Suse... and play from there. A good book for diving into the kernel is "Understanding the Linux Kernel" by Bovet & Cesati... also an O'Reilly book. http://www.digitalhermit.com/linux/Kernel-Build-HOWTO.html -- Kind regards, M Harris <>< -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

What do you mean by "optimizing"? If you think you get much more performance by recompiling the kernel for a specific CPU, then (most likely) you are going to be disappointed... It might help if you could tell us a bit more about your objectives. If the 10.1 kernel is working for you, then there is in principle no need to upgrade. You can get security updates via YOU (or whatever it is called in 10.1+).
