can someone explain the reasoning for sharp to have a windows driver to link the a linux pda and not have a linux driver? was it easier to write a windows driver? I am not critizing shapr, hey it looks like the best linux pda for the next 2 + years.... but i am curious for the decision making
Same thing with the Yopy, it is powered by Linux but can only sync with Outlook express and there is no Linux driver for it. RR wrote:

If I remember correctly, the Agenda VR3 could only sync in Windows also. It seems to be trend that most of the Linux PDAs can't sync in their own environments, which seems weird to me. But, quoting Sergei Rodionov, who posted earlier today on this topic: "You dont need anything other than ssh/ftp to access Zaurus sitting on cradle or connected to network. Therefore Linux would work just fine. Any of them." You guys didn't see that post? Just curious. Ok. lets get over with it 8) After all list is all about SuSE Linux, not about Zaurus, which has in fact own forums set 8) Here is somewhat usefull piece from JavaOne docs on Zaurus and Java on Zaurus. (and there used to be room with about 12 workstation running RedHat linux and cradles to seat Zaurus) And i would strongly suggest to get new flash image, b/c one that comes with developer version of Zaurus shipped in US (other than ones that been sold on JavaOne 2002) is somewhat sucks. Cheers, Sergei =================== SOAP hints: * Submission time format for the What Time Is It? Challenge is hh:mm * The parameter attempttype in the SOAP call is either test or final Use ftp to transfer files between the development system and the Zaurus while the device is in the cradle: * Linux desktop IP: 192.168.129.200 * Sharp Zaurus IP: 192.168.129.201 * prompt% ftp * ftp> open 192.168.129.201 4242 (login as root, no password) To place ipk format files on the Zaurus, turn on the device before placing it in the cradle. Make sure to open serial port cover on the bottom of the device. * create the following directories on the Zaurus (via the shell) mkdir -p /home/root/Documents/application/ipkg * ftp ipk format files to /home/root/Documents/application/ipkg for add/remove tool If you are having network problems try rebooting the Zaurus. Out of the box, you will not be able to unzip files on your Zaurus. Download the files to the linux box and unzip there. Then ftp the files to your Zaurus. If you want to unzip files on your Zaurus, you will need to install the unzip package. To get the unzip package you'll need to complete the following ftp to 172.30.0.84 and get the following file unzip_5.24_arm.ipk. ftp to Zaurus, and transfer unzip_5.24_arm.ipk to the Zaurus. Then run the following command on the Zaurus: * ipkg install unzip_s.24.arm.ipk Installation is complete and you are ready to unzip. To install openssh, do the following from the linux box: * open ftp connection * ftp openssh_1.2.3_arm.ipk * Then run the following command on the Zaurus: ipkg install openssh_1.2.3_arm.ipk To generate public/private keys for ssh, run the following command: * ssh-keygen -b 1024 -f /usr/local/etc/ssh_host_key -N '' Change root's home directory to /home/root * vi /etc/passwd * Change this line: root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/sh to this: root:x:0:0:root:/home/root:/bin/sh If you want to run ssh as daemon after following instructions on www.insomniq.com: * ln -s /usr/local/lib/libz* /usr/lib/libs=z.s0.1 * killall -HUP inetd Important!!! Set a root password before enabling sshd If you get an error message trying to run Java applications on the Zaurus: * QSocket::WhiteBlock:: Cannot open socket * Run the following command on your Zaurus: unset LOGNAME To run Java on your Zaurus you will use evm * evm To increase the heap for your Java application add the following option to your evm command line: * -mx2048k This will set the heap to 2MB Setting up file transfer on your Windows PC You can use the synchonization software included with your Zaurus to transfer files between your PC and your Zaurus. Installation instructions: * Insert the Sharp Personal Mobile Tool SL-5500 CD-ROM version 1.0 quit the autorun app * Connect the cradle, turn on your Zaurus and insert it into the cradle. You should see the New Hardware detected dialog box. Select search for drivers from the CD only. You will detect and install the USB interface and the network interface. * Open the CD by reinserting it or opening it from My Computer, select Install Sync software and then select Qtopia sync install. Complete the installation and reboot. * Download your file(s) and open the file manager. * Start the Qtdesktop. At the bottom of the window is an icon. It should be green and show a connection. Select the Documents folder on the left. You should be able to drag and drop your files onto the documents page. * Sync the Zaurus with your PC. The downloaded files are in /home/root/Documents/octet-stream. Do not upgrade your ROM to 1.13! Sharp has created a special JavaOne version of the ROM. Contact Sharp for upgrade and patch information. How to connect to your Zaurus after leaving the JavaOne Conference If running Windows, the software is on your CD that was included with your Zaurus. For linux, info will follow, but search www.google.com for "ethernet over usb" If you are looking for information on using your CF digital camera with your Zaurus, check the following website www.sharpusa.com/products/TypeSoftware/0,1086,112,00.html

I was at JavaOne where Sharp sold off all the rest of the developer versions of the Zaurus. Believe me, people were going NUTS over this device. People skipped sessions to stand in line for over an hour to get it at the discounted price. They sold off every last one. -- ========================================================= Glenn Holmer (gholmer@ameritech.net) --------------------------------------------------------- "I do like Java. Arf 8) I been there too - got second device (used to order one via my company to do some development few weeks prior to JavaOne) in one of those lines. Was relatively painless to me - only 15 mins. On other hand - my friend spend 2.5 hrs staying in bloody line in first day 8) Point is - each year there is some gadget on sale at JavaOne that i saw - dirt cheap Palms on 99, Blackbery's on 00 (those werent cheaper at all), Zaurus'es on 02 . Developers trying to attract attention to new toys, plus dump stock of developer's versions of gadgets. I hope zaurus will not fall in same pit as previous two devices - i.e it actually will evolve and support more and more stuff and devices 8) =========== Now i am getting wandered if someone managed to get it work ok with SuSE 2.4.18 kernel on Soltek's motherboard (and where the heck mantel's kernels anyway for past week - directory is deserted. Gone in production for 8.0 ?) Patch for Zauruses for 2.4.18 isnt quite applying to SuSe's 2.4.18 8( And even after patching Makefile by hands - usbdnet still seems not quite loaded... 8( USB seems to work though.. (as in - mouse and kbd are on usb) Cheers, Sergei

The release announcement on Friday said it is now compatible with Linux. Sharp has been saying all along that the development version was only compatible with Windows, but the release version will be compatible with Linux. I guess this was to get one of the developers to write a driver ;-) mg On Saturday 30 March 2002 20:20, RR wrote:
