[opensuse] kde 4.5.5 on openSUSE 11.2 just died after update
I just updated KDE to 4.5.5 on openSUSE 11.2. I get the kde login screen, and I can log in to other desktops (ice for example). But when I log in to KDE, the screen turns white and then black. I get an arrow cursor. Nothing more. I can restart the X server with the ctrl-backspace sequence. X is running. The cursor moves. I never get the KDE busy cursor one sees when KDE is starting. The repo KDE came from is: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release:/45/openSUSE_11.2/ The chipset is an ATI ES1000. It runs as a non 3D chip. Nothing fancy. I forced a reinstall of the packages in this repo. No difference. I tried adding a new user jic. No difference. I see (on a virtual terminal) that many kde apps are running. But I cannot tell if one is 'stuck' or some important one is missing. Of course I am at a remote site with limited time. Could it be any other way? I am sure this is the same release of KDE that I am running on a few other systems (different hardware of course). I did not expect a problem. Where to start? Hi Roger Tricky situation! What last worked? Did you upgrade from 11.2's default KDE 4.3 to 4.5? First get some verbose debug (if kwriteconfig doesn't work then the installation is borked at a package consistency level). kwriteconfig --file kdebugrc --key DisableAll false Then I'd look at .xsession-errors or start KDE from a text console (export WINDOWMANAGER=`which startkde`, startx -- :1) and look for complaints. Enable I'm guessing kwin has a problem - see if the debug output is informative. Try forcing compositing off (kwriteconfig --file kwinrc --group Compositing --key Enabled true) then logging in. Or try starting a different window manager inside the running session (icewm --replace). It was from the KDE update KDE version. I can add that I can start things like konsole or dolphin from IceWM. I suspect kwin is the problem. But I do not know...

I tried all but the different wm. I sent you direct the log that I get when running startx. This looks similar to waht I saw in the .xsession-errors file. My eye is not trained to see suspect things in this context. So some obvious error might pass me unnoticed. I was not sure how to run icewm in this context. Where would I actually run toe command?

Since kwin does not crash I think its GL capability check is broken. Does disabling compositing not help for you? FWIW I was able to reproduce this behaviour with a vanilla 11.2 in Virtualbox upgraded to 4.5.5 from KDE:Release:45. I get a black screen whether or not Virtualbox had 3D acceleration enabled. Disabling compositing in kwinrc resolved the issue. I don't know yet why kwin didn't fallback to 2D itself. I don't have time to troubleshoot further today, it's 11.4RC1 checkin deadline for me and I am preparing for FOSDEM (And KR45 packages are so not on the list of things I'm supposed to maintain!). You have helped a lot already. Glad you could reproduce it. Misery loves company! My attempt failed because I used the tag Composting instead of Compositing. kwriteconfig just happily added a new section called Composting. Which of course had no effect. After I corrected that, things are working again. So it seems the fallback to 2D did not happen automatically. If it makes a difference, it is the radeon driver from the X11:/XOrg OBS repo. Thanks ever so much for the help! One less problem caused by my visit! There is only the one system on which this occurs for me. And I have once again left the building. I will see when I can test the backported fix. As to production systems, I know... But I really have had no trouble using said repo. So I really thought it was safe. Overall, given all that does work well with the code in that repo, I still think that is the case. Especially since the only problem I encountered was corrected within an hour or so! BTW, glad to read that we are conservative users. I guess overall we are. That leads me to believe that we are using openSUSE in real life work where reckless behavior is risky. That is a good sign: openSUSE - it's not just for hobbyists. Where to start?
One thing you may try as something to eliminate and rule out, is at the screen where you choose default vs failsafe you can type in the kernel parameter nomodeset and let it proceed to boot. I have doubts that this is your problem, but it is harmless and can eliminate one avenue of misdirection. When I saw black screens, maybe like 6 months ago adding this to grub menu.lst took care of it for me. But it can be tested impromptu by just typing it in during the pause. -Mike -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
