[General] Best practice for remote X (Several questions)
Hi all! I aim to make a "totally silent" work area. So i am looking into X-terminals. I plan to make a really powerful machine that i can stuff in a closet or another room, and then use a multiheaded x-terminal to view/run the apps on. I have the idea of a Dual CPU "server" and a single CPU "client" The client can be diskless as far as i have been able to find out. The only thing it's suppose to do is view the results, all the work is to be done on the server. Now the questions: * Is this a good way of doing it? Or shall i go for a quiet ordinary workstation? (Complete with disks and the lots) * What kind of bandwith will i need? I was thinking of using a separate network only for this terminal. The server having two NIC's One for the terminal, and one for the regular network, to keep the load separate. * What about sound? Network sound systems. Are they functional enough? I probably want to use the SB Live! that i have on the server, and route the SPDIF signal to the stereo anyway. Can i have both? (Sound on the stereo, and the terminal) * Are there any ways of "remoteing" the DVD/CD-rom? Can i use a DVD/CD at the clients side and have the server use it? I guess a NFS'd mountpoint on the client could work, but is that really a good practice?) -- /Rikard ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Rikard Johnels email : rikjoh@norweb.se Web : http://www.rikjoh.com Mob : +46 735 05 51 01 ------------------------ Public PGP fingerprint ---------------------------- < 15 28 DF 78 67 98 B2 16 1F D3 FD C5 59 D4 B6 78 46 1C EE 56 >

You may want to check out http://www.ltsp.org . I have used this in the past and had remote (on the client) sound and printing. The newer versions also have floppy and CD support. Setup can seem a little difficult at first, but the documentation is very good. It was nice seeing some old hardware being useful again. HTH Louis
