This is marginally off-topic, so I'd be happy to take any responses off-list (unless others are interested as well). When my wife's computer's hard disk drive self-destructed, I suggested that she might want to give Linux a try, instead of replacing the Vista that her machine came with. So I installed openSuSE 11.0, with KDE 3.5, and she's been fairly pleased with it. She's not at all technical, but she's been a good sport about learning new ways to do things. It helps that MOST of what she uses a computer for are email and browsing, and Thunderbird/Firefox aren't all that different in operation from the Vista clients she's already accustomed to. The deal-breaker may be if I can't find a way for her to copy snapshots from her Motorola Razr V3 to her computer, though. I've followed up on what seemed to be promising leads, but I've never gotten anything to work. It's been an immensely popular phone over the years, however. I'm hoping that someone here has found the answer, and will share. We don't need any additional features -- like sync'ing with an address book -- we just want her to be able to copy the pictures from her phone to her computer. Any ideas out there? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

have a look at the gphoto package. It lists "Motorola RAZR2 V8" as being supported. I didn't research the differences to V3 but usually backward compatability is maintained. -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Activate the bluetooth on your phone. Also the bluetooth service on opensuse (rcbluetooth start). It's should a BlueZ icon at the bottom-right if your desktop. Pair the phone and pc. Then click the icon to browse your phone content. Then you can copy the photo to the disk. medwinz -- Helen Hayes - "Age is not important unless you're a cheese." -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Jerry, I think your being able to access a Razr depends on your carrier. I had a Razr V2 with Cingular (now AT&T) that I could never get working with Linux. I think that AT&T deliberately hobbled the phone's capabilities to act as a standard external storage device. When my AT&T contract ended I dumped them for T-Mobile. (I signed up with Pacific Bell Mobile Services, then taken over by SBC, then taken over by AT&T. AT&T is evil, I left as soon as I could.) I now have a T-Mobile Motorola Rizr and your question prompted me to try it with SuSE 11.0/KDE-3.5. I connected it via USB and Presto! it mounted right away and appeared as an external storage device. I downloaded my photos with Digikam in a pair of New York seconds. Then, I removed the USB cable and plugged in a small BlueTooth adapter that I haven't used for a year or so. Presto! I was able to access the phone via KBlutTooth. I still have the older Razr and tried it again with the USB cable and it was as dead as a doornail. So, from my limited experience, T-Mobile is the way to go. openSuSE 11.0/KDE-3.5 is fine and will work well if your phone supports it. I'm not an expert in these matters, YMMV. Regards, Lew Wolfgang BTW, I tried Verizon too, but I prefer GSM with customer-removeable SIM cards. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. The phone in question is serviced by Cingular, which was bought by AT&T. I think it may be accessible, because at one time I had Motorola software that allowed access via USB on an XP-Pro machine. Her computer doesn't have Bluetooth, but if that will solve the problem (and keep her from going back to Vista), it would be worth the price of an adapter. I'll definitely look into that. Meanwhile, I'll give that a try with my little XP-Pro Lenovo laptop, which does have Bluetooth, and see if I can access the files from there without any special application software. Thanks again, everyone. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
