Pavucontrol depends on alsa so you need to use alsamixer to set things up first. Install alsamixer and run it in a terminal. First thing you do is use (?)F6 to select the audio device - which will be the one of your mobo. Then go thru and select the various channels (use the "m" key to mute/unmute the channels). Once this is done kmix and pavu will start to work.
