Hi all, I've gone through all the mails about this issue. My FireFox just suddenly a week or two ago crashed when I tried anything with printing to a CUPS printer. Please note that this Gtk printing crash is not supposed to happen in 10.3. At least there were never reports about that. gtk2-2.12.0-5.8.x86_64.rpm is the latest official gtk2 package available there. The symbol lookup error somehow suggests that something doesn't fit together on your system. You should recover your system to not use GNOME:STABLE if possible and then let's start to analyze that by getting stacktraces. Wolfgang Hi Wolfgang,
Thanks for the info. I struggled last night with various attempts to solve the problem. First I tried the GNOME update of gtk2, which failed as you see in my previous mail. I saw other entries about gtk2 in the Inet, and updated even to the newest gtk2 available. Then the problem expanded that none of the GNOME proggies worked at all, all with this same symbol lookup error. Today I took out the community repos of GNOME and forced an update with YaST to get back to the original state for the standard OpenSUSE. Both Firefox and Thunderbird work again, but now both with the crash when I want to do anything with printing. Now I have: Firefox 3.0: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.1) Gecko/2008070400 SUSE/3.0.1-2.1 Firefox/3.0.1 Thunderbird: version 2.0.0.16 (20080720) On OpenSUSE 10.3: uname -a Linux _ 2.6.22.18-0.2-default #1 SMP 2008-06-09 13:53:20 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux with glib2: rpm -q --qf '%{name}-%{version}-%{release}-%{distribution}\n' gtk2 gtk2-2.12.0-5.8-openSUSE 10.3 (X86-64) More info: Both Firefox and Thunderbird crash when I want to do anything concerning printing. GIMP does not crash, it sends the data to the printer and the printer reads the data by flashing the reception LED, but then it just stops and go back to ready (a problem I had with Evolution on more than one OpenSUSE distro before - I actually dropped Evolution for Thunderbird!). I am not sure when, but since an update with OpenSUSE Updater about 2 weeks ago the problem was reported to me by a user. I only came to investigate it on Wednesday. So, where do we go next? Well, I solved the problem. I removed the CUPS printers and the Cups Server it was on. I have a AVM Fritz!Box 7170 with an embedded Linux. It has a USB2 port for HD's and Printers. I just plugged it in and the Fritz!Box immediately recognised it and allows the printers to be published. I went to my OpenSUSE 10.3 and deleted the CUPS printer and installed a remote "Jet-Direct" printer by just entering the IP and port 9100. It worked first shot!! FireFox 3.0.3 (i.e. 3.0.1 - 3.0.3) and Thunderbird 2.0.0.17 (i.e. 2.0.0.14 - 2.0.0.17) also does not work with CUPS on OpenSUSE 10.3. I am not sure what your problem was exactly, but the above certainly isn't categorically true. I am running 10.3, with Firefox (64 bit) 3.03 and Thunderbird 2.0.0.17 (64 bit) (though I should also stipulate I do update my Cups from OBS Printing Repo), and I have no problem printing to either my cups printers, nor my cups-pdf printer, nor the dialog box pdf option. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 10.3 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Joe, OK. I have rpm -q --qf '%{name}-%{version}-%{release}-%{distribution}\n' gtk2 gtk2-2.12.0-5.8-openSUSE 10.3 (X86-64) gtk2 was said then to be the problem. What I haven't tried was: rpm -q --qf '%{name}-%{version}-%{release}-%{distribution}\n' cups cups-1.2.12-22.15-openSUSE 10.3 (X86-64) Could it be the cups version? Hi Joe,
OK. I have rpm -q --qf '%{name}-%{version}-%{release}-%{distribution}\n' gtk2 gtk2-2.12.0-5.8-openSUSE 10.3 (X86-64)

I have the same version as you. joe@jmorris:~> rpm -q --qf '%{name}-%{version}-%{release}-%{distribution}\n' gtk2 gtk2-2.12.0-5.8-openSUSE 10.3 (X86-64)
What I haven't tried was: rpm -q --qf '%{name}-%{version}-%{release}-%{distribution}\n' cups cups-1.2.12-22.15-openSUSE 10.3 (X86-64)
Mine is quite a bit different here. joe@jmorris:~> rpm -q --qf '%{name}-%{version}-%{release}-%{distribution}\n' cups cups-1.3.8-1.1-Printing / openSUSE_10.3
Could it be the cups version? Why?
I would sure guess it must be. You could try adding the BS Printing repo and update the packages from there. I can say it works fine here. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 10.3 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
