please!! help me, completly lost!
Hy there! first of all, forgive my english, i read a lot better then write!! Oh great hall of linux geeks, my question is the following : I´ll need to upgrade my production network server (samba + mysql) hd´s, with the following scenario : i actually have 4 20 Gig disks, 2 of then into an raid1 (software) and another two for backups pourpouses, but my poor raid is actualy 97% full..... and if our dear shoes designers save another 200 megs files, i´ll probably will have my face into a dart target... no problems into transfering data, partitioning, building raid valumes, blablabal, BUT I CAN´T BOOT! please, i´m completly newby with boot loaders over linux machines, i´ve been searching discussion lists like these, googling a lot ever the last week, but everywhere where someone tell woh to make it, theres a lack of information exacly where they say how to transfer the boot, and time is going short! P.S : not shure about wich boot loader actualy using.. LILO or GRUB, both are installed, and can´t restart server over next 3 weeks! using SUSE 8.1 any help, even a link, would be very welcome. Forgive the top posting.
Is it just me or has this exact email been set to the list 3 or 4 times
already?
Repeatedly sending the same message with get no more of an answer than
sending it just once. If someone has help for you they would have already
responded.

Ok, but how about slowing down and giving some more details.... You have essentially two drives now (raid) that are 'production' and almost full. How do you plan to move to new drives? Install the new drives alongside the current drives and do a copy of some kind? blah blah blah. Solving the boot problem is probably the least of your concerns... and if you fill us in with some more details, we can probably help.

I recall, some years ago, installing SuSE (?7.1/2) on someone's
machine which was equipped with hard drives configured as RAID..
As I recall, there was an issue about booting from a RAID setup.
Basically, you needed either to have the boot stuff on a non-RAID
drive, or else to boot from a floppy. If the boot files were on
the RAID array then it would not work.
I don't know if things have changed since then, and I certainly
don't claim any reliable knowledge of RAID setups.
So if any of you thinks this may have something to do with Joao's
problems, and knows about RAID and booting, then please spell out
for him how to proceed!

Ted.
You can boot from RAID level 1 (mirror) with no problems. When installing 9.0 the boot loader was automaticaly changed from grub to lilo when I set up a mirrored system. This is due to a bug in grub. If I changed the boot loader back to grub, the system would not boot (I had the same problems with my Fedora box wich did not automaticaly switch boot loaders). In any case, the system will boot if lilo is used. However, only the first drive has the loader on the MBR. Once booted you can switch to grub and setup the MBR on both drives. You can even edit menu.1st to include an entry to boot the mirror. This may be needed depending on how you bios handles a primary drive failure. # grub grub> device (hd0) /dev/hdb grub> root (hd0,0) grub> setup (hd0) Grub> quit The above assumes that the /boot partition is the first partition and would load grub on the second drive. This can also be done by booting in rescue mode and mount and chroot your system. Check out: http://www.doorbot.com/guides/linux/x86/grubraid/ -- Louis D. Richards LDR Interactive Technologies
