encrypted Ideapad: passphrase asked twice/device descriptor read
So I installed OS 15.3 o my new Lenovo Ideapad Duet 3. It went ok (later I will open new threads for different smaller prolbems). I let the installer overwrite all former partitions and used "encrypted system" within the installer. So I have /dev/mmcblk0 116.48 GiB mmcblk0p1 0.5 GiB Ext4 /boot/efi mmcblk0p2 29.47 GiB Ext4 / (encrypted) mmcblk0p3 78.94 GiB Ext4 /hme (encrypted) mmcblk0p4 7.57 GiB Swap encrypted When I switch on the device I get: Attempting to decrypt master key... Enter passphrase for hd0, gpt2 (hex nmber) I enter the passphrase I takes 50 seconds until the grub menu appears, ten it shows Started Plymouth Boot Screen. Forward Passworëto Plymouth Directory Watch. Reached targets Paths. Found device /dev/disk/by-long hex number Found device /dev/disk/by-long hex nmber Found device /dev/disk/by_uuid/hex number Starting Cryptography Setup for cr_root... Starting Cryptography Setup for cr_swap... Please enter passphrase for disk cr_swap:: [6.974882] usb 1-5: device descriptor read/64, error -71 I enter the passphrase again, and it boots. Something is wrong. Passphrase should be asked only once and the 50 seconds after the first enter are loooog. What can I do? (I can repeat install if necessary as I have not copied any personal data nor did any settings until now) Thanks for hints. -- Daniel Bauer photographer Basel Málaga https://www.patreon.com/danielbauer https://www.daniel-bauer.com

You did not backup the windows section? You could need it for warranty.

Only for swap? Now, that is very curious.

I made dd to an external disk.

Remember that being new and nearly empty, you can compress those images a lot. ...

I don't know what method it is using. Apparently it is done without LVM, which previously was not supported. And it loads directly on Grub, which is fantastic. I understand /boot/EFI is not encrypted. Maybe the password can not be passed on to the booted system, so it gets asked twice. Dunno. This method is new to me. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. The problem was that /boot was within the encrypted / So first Grub asked for the passphrase to open boot, which takes a loooong time (here 50 seconds), and then later the kernel asks again. So I did a fresh install with a separate, UNencrypted /boot partition. Now the passphrase is only asked once, when the kernel needs it. Am 30.06.21 um 12:33 schrieb Daniel Bauer:

It is not a problem, it is a feature. FULL encryption is what you got :-) -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.2 x86_64 at Telcontar)
