RE: [SLE] Kernel compile problems
Just thought I would follow up and say I have tried again with the 2.2.15 kernel and all worked perfectly including sound! I can't actually believe it. Not having to use isapnp! Everything going well now. I will however reserve the right to annoy the heck out of the list with further questions. A lot seems to have changed for the better since 6.1! Well, after trying several other distributions for quite while, I was impressed by the reviews to give Suse 6.4 a try. The problem is I am having some problems which may be a function of what I am trying to do and may be a function of Suse. I downloaded 2.3.99-pre8 and tried to make xconfig. It failed saying it couldn't handle the tri-conflicts between several of what appeared to be tcl/tk paramereters. I have checked and seem to have all of the tcl/tk stuff installed. Does this just not work in that development kernel release or is it me? After doing the compile and rebooting I get a stack dump almost immediately after the kernel loads. Tried compiling the same kernel at home on my desktop and had the same thing happen. Is this likely to be a piece of unstable kernel code that I keep selecting? I am trying ot recompile because I was told that the stock kernel doesn't support the Maestro ESS1978 sound chip in my Compaq M700. Any help appreciated. I am determined. This time I will conquer Suse! Jason: Did you download the 2.2.15 source in tar.gz format, or did you get this in a SuSE friendly RPM format that can be installed by doing an rpm -Uvh on my system? If it did come in rpm format, where did you pick this up? - Mike On Tue, 23 May 2000, Carley, Jason (Australia) wrote:
