[opensuse] Nvidia kernel modules don't match drivers :(

kerned 2.6.34 is the official release version for 11.3. If you choose to use a newer kernel from elsewhere you need to compile the nvidia driver from source. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

...or install it using the *.run file from the nvidia website. this will also compile the module according to your installed kernel, but it'll do all the work for you. it's sometimes called "installing nvidia proprietary driver the hard way," even though it isn't very hard. you have to have your kernel's source installed though, and need a few basic development packages. you find information about the process in this list & on the openSUSE wiki. -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Please do not give bad advice. The Kernel modules on NVIDIAs website should still work fine with the latest 11.3 Update kernel. (KMPs do not require to be updated everytime we release a new kernel, there is KMP symlinking magic making this unnecessary.) Ciao, Marcus
As noted earlier, I'm using kernel 2.6.36.90 from HEAD, as I'd had problems with the standard 11.3 kernel (2.6.34) and the nvidia drivers. When I fired up YaST, it offered upgrades to both the driver and the KMP, which I accepted. Next time I tried to start X, the GUI failed because of an apparent mismatch between the KMP and the driver. I know how to do it 'the hard way', but I was puzzled that the nvidia repo for openSUSE 11.3 offered the incompatible driver/KMP combination. But maybe they're not incompatible if you use the 2.6.34 kernel? I am using kernel version 2.6.37-rc2 with nvidia drivers downloaded from nvidia repos. No problem here. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well, I'm not sure what went wrong here using the YaST offerings, but it's working OK with the nvidia drivers downloaded from the nvidia website :) Roll on 11.4 ;) Bob -- Registered Linux User #463880 FSFE Member #1300 GPG-FP: A6C1 457C 6DBA B13E 5524 F703 D12A FB79 926B 994E openSUSE 11.3 64-bit, Kernel 2.6.36.90-desktop, KDE 4.5.3 Intel Core2 Quad Q9400 2.66GHz, 8GB DDR RAM, nVidia GeForce 9600GT -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

i don't understand what's so bad about this advice. using rpm packages from a repo is easier, but in this case it doesn't work for me. i'm running the latest kernel from Kernel:/HEAD, the latest nvidia driver, and KDE 4.5.3 without any problems -- sounds pretty good to me. this may or may not work for others, depending on their hardware or system specifics, but that's the same with any advice re. nvidia & co. recompiling kernel modules each time i install a new kernel takes 5-10 min, which i find acceptable. -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
