Spam autoresponses when posting to the list
Hi all, I've blocked the idiot and the whole my-mail.ch domain because they never responded. He had subscribed to the several of our lists and was sending autoresponses to the header from on posts; i.e., the mail didn't actually go through our lists. It's obvious that spammers are getting more sophisticated with their evil trade and I don't expect that this is the last time we'll see something like this. As always, the best way to avoid something like this is to not use your normal address in your From: header. Your subscription is based on sender From (i.e., your "envelope" from) and that address is never shown to other subscribers. If you use a unique address when posting to our lists and mail delivered to that address can be automatically deleted or bounced. If you aren't sure how to do this feel free to ask ml-admin@suse.com and, time permitting, I'll do my best to help. Cheers, -- -ckm

I think he means that we could email to the list using a correct envelope from address different from the _shown_ or internal from address, and maybe inexistent one. But I didn't fully understand what he said, and I have no idea how to implement that. I think he also mentioned using a unique adress just for the list, and deleting anything sent to that address and not to the list.
I tried to Post to the List, using a Pseudo-Identity :-
tabanna.spamex@aig.forthnet.gr
but, that message did not get thru. ?
Of course not! :-) -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

It's s bit difficult to stop. The "envelope from" is what your mail client tells the server in the "MAIL FROM:" command. The "message from" (or whatever the correct terminology is) is a regular line in the email's DATA section. It's as though you had sent the mail the way you normally do, but you start the mail with a line From: <pseudo address> or it would have been, if your mailer hadn't already set a "message from" for you, and this is where your problem is. You're using kmail, and in kmail the envelope from and message from are always identical. It's hard coded in the program. If I can work up enough enthusiasm/masochism to dig into the c++ code I may hack up something. In the meantime you could look at other MUAs. I believe Chris was using mutt when he sent that. I know Ben is only to keen to teach people how to use it :)

Gee, thanks Anders In most all ways I am very happy with Kmail. ~ if I had courage, to try to move to <Mutt>, I guess I have to learn how to set up Postfix & Proqmail? thanks best wishes ____________ sent on Linux ____________

Me too. I think it's the best mail client I've tried. Of course, not everything works the way I like, but that's what open source is all about. Now, let's see if this works as I intended

It looks like it works, AFAICS, and now I even have a nice edit box in the settings menu so I can edit it as I please. Is this a feature people would find interesting? Anders

Instead of using your isp relay, use your own; ie, mail through sendmail or postfix. However, the receiving end could reject non-existing "from" addresses as well. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
