[SLE] HOWTO: find out how much HD spaced used by a folder
I have maxed out my / drive and I would like to find out how much space is in any given directory (including it's sub directory). I believe the command is du, but I cannot figure out how to make it give me one grand total at the end. How do I go about doing that? -- Sam Carleton ------------ http://www.bigfoot.com/~scarleton (Homepage) -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Both "man du" and "info du" describe "du -c" as giving a total at the end. Sam Carleton wrote:

For example, heres the output run on my home directory: skull@daydream:~ > find ./ -size +8192k -exec ls -s {} \; | sort -n 10364 ./.mozilla/skull/history.dat 10368 ./.netscape/history.dat which shows that I have 2, files larger then 8mg, histroy.dat to be exact residing at the above locations. As for why the -exec errored on him, I've mailed him privately in hopes of assiting him in figuring out what may be the problem even though there may be another way to get the above results, he still shouldn't have gotten that error in the first place. :) hk> - Herman hk> hk> On Tue, 11 Apr 2000, Togan Muftuoglu wrote: hk> hk> ->>"S.Toms" wrote: hk> ->> hk> ->>> I use the following, but I tend to the side of overkill when I do things hk> ->>> :) anyway, give it a shot hk> ->>> hk> ->>> find / -size +1024k -exec ls -s {} \; | sort -n hk> ->> ^^^^ hk> ->> hk> ->>well when I run it I get missing argument to 'exec' hk> ->> hk> ->> hk> hk> -- S.Toms - tomas@primenet.com - www.primenet.com/~tomas SuSE Linux v6.3+ - Kernel 2.2.14 -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
