[SuSE Linux] Gateway problem
Hi all, Thanks to LenZ, for your answer about masquerade, last week. TOP-JOB SuSe! Look this is the big advantage of SuSe over Red Hat, that SuSe looks to the mailinglist, and really answer questions. I never got an answer from RH! Once again Top_Job SuSe, and I hope you will continue to answer questions of newbies (like myself) direct on the mailinglist. I still have problems with this masquerad. In rc.config I put under MSQ_NETWORKS="192.168.1.0/24" MSQ_DEV="/dev/ttyI0" When I start Nescape on the Win95 machine my Linux PC dials without any problem, but there is no display in Netscape. It seems to me that the Linux PC does not tranfer anything to the Win95 PC. Do I have to set some more thing in: hosts.conf host or resolv.conf or somewhere els, in order to tranfer the connection to the Win95 PC. I also tried to put the default gateway 192.168.1.0 in YaST, but it still doesn't work. What could be the cause of this problem? Thanks for any help, or suggestions. Thanks for your warm comments. Do not expect this as a regular service, sometimes even we have to work :) I'll be away from my mail at the and of this week till mid-January.

"/dev/ttyI0" is your problem. This is not a regular network device. It is just an "modem emulation" to your ISDN-card. If you are using pppd to connect to this interface, you should have a PPP device when pppd is up, e.g. /dev/ppp0. Use this one as the Masquerading device. If you are using syncPPP with ISDN, I'd recommend to use /dev/ippp0 instead. Thanks for your reply Lenz. I checked my settings and indeed it's ippp0, so that ok. But it's still not working. When I start Nestcape ( Nescape with direct connection to Internet under Proxy settings, or do i have to set it to proxy connection) the Linux PC dials but no display in Netscape on the Win95 PC. What els do I have to adjust like host.conf. or host or resolv.conf ? Do I have to put this gateway IP number (192.168.1.0) in some of these files? Do I have to put Firewall "yes" in order to use Masquerade, or can it be used seperate? When I put "default 192.168.1.0 in the host.conf file i get an error message at bootup. Thanks for any help Rgds Wil Lenz Grimmer wrote:

Your default route (in /etc/route.conf) should point to your point-to-point partner of your ISDN connection. You should also have your Provider's DNS in your /etc/resolv.conf (Configure this using YaST).
Do I have to put Firewall "yes" in order to use Masquerade, or can it be used seperate?
No, you don't need to activate the firewalling rules to be able to use the masquerading features.
When I put "default 192.168.1.0 in the host.conf file i get an error message at bootup.
There is no need to modify /etc/host.conf. You should have your ISP's DNS IP-Adress in /etc/resolv.conf. In addition to that, your default route in /etc/route.conf should point to your ISP's IP-Adress (the "other" side of your ISDN connection), you can configure all these things using YaST. So, if you run "ifconfig" as user "root", you should see at least three network devices: lo (your loopback interface), eth0 (your Ethernet NIC) and ippp0 (your syncPPP ISDN-connection). You should also have three lines in /etc/route.conf (one for eth0, one for ippp0 and your default route). As far as Netscape goes, you've got to go into the advanced settings and set it up for up for a proxy connection to the internet, and yes, you will have to tell it the address of your linux box:-) As far as the ports goes, that depends on what you are using as a proxy server on the linux box. If you get the most recent version of Apache (src) and recompile it with the correct options, you can leave the default ports, but if you use something else as your proxy server than you will have to change the ports according to the ports you have configured on your proxy server. At least that's the way I did it here:-)
When I put "default 192.168.1.0 in the host.conf file i get an error message at bootup.
You should set up something else as your gateway address (192.168.1.0 is used in a mask to determine who is on the network (as is .255). There is a faq available that does a real good job of explaining what a valid address is. Basically, 192.168.1.0 is the network address, and any number in the fourth place is the host address. There are also addresses like 192.168.1.31 which is used as a mask to determine what hosts are available, 192.168.1.255 detects all hosts, but there are other numbers that are used to determine hosts on subnets:-)
When I start Nescape on the Win95 machine my Linux PC dials without any problem, but there is no display in Netscape. It seems to me that the Linux PC does not tranfer anything to the Win95 PC. You do have to declare all the hosts that are on your system in your hosts.conf file, yes, and your best bet would be to change the address of your linux box to 192.168.1.1 and let ifconfig set up 192.168.1.0 ..... eth0 up (or whatever your using to connect your two computers onto a network) -- cya l8r Leon McClatchey leonmcclatchey@homemail.com Linux User 78912 (Win95 Box) - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>

Is this your *network* address? See my comment for your gateway!

Well, good Idea, probably wrong address. The gateway is your ISP's PtP port address, the address you dial to. (On your Linux box!!)
On your Win XX machine, you must enter a nameserver (either your ISP's nameserver or, if you have a caching NS running the eth0 address of your linux box) Furthermore, your default Gateway on your Win XX system is (again eth0 address) is your Linux box, since that one knows the way to the next gateway (see above) HIH Jürgen -- ========================================== __ _ Juergen Braukmann mail: brauki@cityweb.de| -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Tel: 0201-743648 dk4jb@db0qs.#nrw.deu.eu| /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ==========================================_\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
