[opensuse] Kernel for OpenSuSE on Intel DG43NB
Dear List, Need you advise to compile kernel. I got a difficulty to do it for OpenSuSE 11.1 on motherboard Intel. Below my Hardware spec. Intel Celeron 430 (dual core) Intel Mobo DG43NB (VGA & NIC are embedded) Seagate HDD SATA 80 GB (config as AHCI) ** May be a few people use this main board. Please share your experience for this stuff Questions: 1. What should I chose for HDD option? SATA or SCSI? 2. For Dual Core (or Core2Duo) proc, should I choose enable SMP option or single CPU machine? Your advises are very appreciated and waited for. Why you need to compile your own kernel in the first place ? -default kernel should work just fine.. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Need some enhancements (and add some patches) that not available in stock kernel. Thx & Rgds, Wong -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Wong, The standard opensuse kernel comes with source and all the config options already chosen. Compile it wherever / however you can. Then add your extra patches and recompile. You should not need to be making decisions like in your first email. Just go with the standard answers opensuse uses. OK Greg. Would you tell me where I can get resource about how-to enhanced OpenSuSE Linux? This is my first time to use SuSE Linux, I want to optimize and make it efficiently. You dont need to, compiling your own kernel will not make your machine to run more efficiently. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Hi Cristian,
Thanks for your email.
1. I found a lot of modules that I don't need and want to remove from my
box.
2. I need my Netfilter support "string" inspection feature that need patch &
re-compile kernel.
Thx & Rgds,
Wong

Modules that you are not using don't cause any issue on your system, just leave it as is.

If it is not in the kernel, is very likely that is eithe r not recommended or unsupported, for a reason. You can build your own kernel of course, please read http://en.opensuse.org/Configure%2C_Build_and_Install_a_Custom_Linux_Kernel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
