Now here's an idea I've had for some time .... maybe the folks at SuSE would be interested in setting this up at their site. This idea would definitely bring traffic to their site - all Linux users would benefit - no matter what dist they use. What would really be nice is if someone on a fast backbone were to build a "Kernel Compiler Web Site". Users could, using a web form based upon various kernel revs, submit an order to the site, have a kernel compiled and either e-mailed or sitting in a 'pickup directory' once it's completed. The resulting kernel would be in a tar.gz file with a copy of the .config file you submitted. The site could be paid for with banner ads and or subscriptions. Plus, folks on slower machines could take advantage of a faster machine to get a custom kernel direct from the net. As you think about it, the benefits start explaining themselves. If you set up a subscription service, subscibers could have the next rev of the Linux kernel delivered upon release, based upon subsciber information which would include a working .config file for however many systems you have subscribed. A base subscription might include 3 different .configs. And then, once the site is working and debugged, you could make a bundle out of it and include it with every distribution, thus, more folks could set up a link with ready made pages for their own kernel compiler web sites .... -tks- -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
