[opensuse] nVidia MCP61 Ethernet (rev a2) "No configuration found" boot message
Please help! I just purchased a new computer, and tried to install my existing 10.2 SuSE. But the Internet Test failed and I saw the above boot message. I don't have room on my old computer to download 11.2, and the box is still not available here in North America. Is there any way to get MCP61 to work with 10.2? Can I add another ethernet card -- one that 10.2 does recognize -- and disable the MCP61? Can I configure the MCP61 with Yast? Do I need to install the forcedeth driver? If so, how? Is the MCP61 onboard device supported in 11.2? Wow, no room for the 109MB for the net install ISO, you're really squeezing the machine pretty good.
and the box is still not available here in North America. Is there any way to get

Well, 10.2 is EOL (end of life) thus you are entering very much uncharted territory.
Can I add another ethernet card -- one that 10.2 does recognize -- and disable the MCP61?
That is probably your best option. You will not need to disable the MCP61 as it is not recognized anyway.
Can I configure the MCP61 with Yast?
Not if there is no kernel driver, which I believe there is not.
Do I need to install the forcedeth driver? If so, how?

Looks like MCP61 support was added in the 2.6.16 kernel. openSUSE 11.2 uses the 2.6.31 kernel, you should be good to go. Robert

Thank you for the encouraging news about 11.2, Robert. But if the support was added in 2.6.16, then my installation disk should have it, since my nucleus is 2.6.18 (on my old 32-bit machine). Maybe 64-bit is a different story. As far as I know, I CAN'T do a net install to the new computer, because the internet connection goes THROUGH the nVidia MCP61. I've been waiting for months to buy the 11.2 box, but it's still not on the market. Maybe I can download 11.2 64-bit into my unused Microsoft partition here. If I add a Linux-compatible ethernet card, I suppose I'll have to worry about it being compatible with the motherboard! But the alternative is to return the computer and pay a 30% restocking fee. It's a shame that this beautiful new machine stands idle because of one little chipset! Well, thanks for the suggestions. --- On Wed, 2/10/10, Robert Schweikert <rschweikert@novell.com> wrote:

Sorry, now I am confused. As you are sending e-mail you must have some kind of internet connection. From the machine you are sending these messages you should be able to download the netinstall CD and burn it to disk or dump it to a USB stick. The boot off this and install 11.2 I am certain the 11.2 install will work with the MCP61 card. Robert
