su is -not- a user that you log into, it is a command used to change identities temporarily to another user. su = SubstituteUser. When used without any parameters the default user is root. When used with another user name (su joe) you will change your identity to joe. When used with the "-" minus sign (su - joe) it means change my identity to the user joe and also use his login environment. su - means which my identity to root and also use root's login environment. Just thought I would help straighten this up as it could throw off a new user into thinking he could log in with the username su.

In Ubuntu/Kubuntu su is the Super User log in that you use to access root privileges while using the ordinary users (yourself) password. I think it is different in SuSE so I apologise for leaving that bit in my HOW TO. Please remember it was written with Ubuntu/Kubuntu in mind :-) -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Xmas may be over but, PLEASE DON'T drink and drive you'll make it to the next one that way.
