Re: FWD: RE: [SuSE Linux] Matrox G200 card. Opinions needed
Dear Michael Andersen, I only wanted to tell that the Matrox cards don't have an accelerated server. I don't know how the co-operation is between Matrox and XFree. But i myself don't think there will be chances that there will be a accelerated XFree86 server for the Matrox cards. By the way i know that the Matrox cards are very fast even under a SVGA XFree server. but the thing i'm worried about is. That whenever XFree will support 3 D. That Matrox won't be available with 3 D support under XFree, what do you think? By the way i use both ATI Rage II cards, S3 virage and Matrox mystique cards. To be honest with the applications i use there isn't much of a difference. I'm also using the virtual PC program from www.vmware.com. It works both great under Mach acc en SVGA server with a mystique. I hope i haven't offended people. I'm sorry if i did. Regards, Joop Boonen. Can someone give me some information about firms that produce video chips and who are working closely together with XFree86? I mean basically there is no firm that ports applications to Linux. I've never seen any program of ATI for the TV function for the all in wonder cards or from Matrox for the Rainbow runner etc. Michael Andersen wrote:

There are files for the Voodoo chip in the suse distribution. I don't know what they do.
By the way there is not as of yet any accelerated xfree86 server for a matrox card.
What?!? I have used several different Matrox models (now using a Millenium G200). It's fast and I strongly believe they were always the very fastest with XFree86. So there.

The fact that there isn't a separate driver for the Matrox cards doesn't mean there isn't accelerated drivers for them. They're just integrated in the SVGA driver (i.e. it contains specific Matrox code). Furthermore I believe Matrox recently released full specs for their cards (more or less, as it's only available to "registered developers", can anyone tell more?). I think the Matrox cards will soon be the best supported cards in the 3D area, as they're always been in the 2D area. -- Michael Andersen ----------->> Stop software piracy --- use free software! <<----------- -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
Michael is correct. Check out Xfree86.org and you will see in the list of supported drivers that the G200 chip is directly supported. This would not be the case if it was merely supported through the generic SVGA driver. However, as with most any cards, the feature connectors and advanced functionaility such as SVIDEO are usually not supported. This is not always the result of a failure of the company to provide specs, but in my experience more often because not enough people cared enough about that type of functionality to put the effort into writing the necessary driver code. I strongly believe (but don't know for sure) that Matrox releases specs for their cards to the community very quickly. I believe this because drivers for their cards on Linux are almost always availble very shortly after the release of a new card. Also, Matrox has always been very supportive of alternative OS' (I know this as a former OS/2 user). Michael Andersen wrote:

Sorry to waste bandwidth, but...... SUPPORT HARDWARE MANUFACTURERS THAT SUPPORT LINUX! Matrox has made a significant step by releasing their code. Thanks Matrox! Bob Michael Andersen wrote:

I think there is hope for Matrox, which I hope will be my next video card. I say hope because I recall seeing a note that Matrox had provided access for the sources of the G200, which suggestes to me that we will eventually see a server, perhaps even for the Marvel, which personally I'd like to see(Hauppauge which is the card I have, has not been as open as as Matrox). Support those businesses that support Linux in a real way. Bob Joop Boonen wrote:
