[opensuse] openSUSE 11 & gigabit
Hello, I just received a gigabit hub. The cable connected to my son's XP computer is green (gigabit), but the one connected to my openSUSE box is yellow (10/100) is there something to do to have gigabit on the Linux box? (network eth, of course, r8169 module, RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller the cables are cat 5, so I don't expect full speed, but the XP cable is older and the green light is on :-) quick test: 450Mb/1mn, that is 125Mb/s average thanks jdd -- http://www.dodin.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well, although Cat5e should be better, Cat5 "should" work with Gigabit Ethernet. Also check that you have a full four twisted pairs cable. Could you also place the output of 'ethtool eth0' ? A few clews could be found there. You can also use that tool to try to change the network link mode manually, but generally that is not a recommended method. If you intent to place the output like I suggested you to, please do it before any manual change.

thanks jdd

Well, IMHO you have to start eliminating where the problem comes from. Here are some ideas: - You can try with a crossover cable to perform a direct test with your XP machine. If it works at GBit, then your openSUSE machine is most certainly OK. - Connect the openSUSE 11.0 network cable to the same switch port that your XP machine is connected at ( temporarily disable you XP machine ). If it connects at GBit, it could be a switch port problem ( on the other one, of course... ). - If both fail to connect at GBit, then your problem is probably more esoteric. Please report your tests...

you got it! this is a switch port problem, on an other port it connect with 1000Mb thanks! jdd -- Jean-Daniel Dodin Président du CULTe www.culte.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The negotiation between your network card and the switch might result in 100 Mbps even though they both can do 1 Gbps. Such incompatibilities happen rarely. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
