Hammered my system, (and YAST was the hammer
SuSE7.2pro,512mb ram, ati all-in-wonder128, 32mb video, xfree86version-wouldn't dare to guess [8-0 perhaps I should call it 4.2.#&%@??? Short description of problem... Tried to install newer Xfree86 packages from SuSE (supplementary, not experimental...), The install failed, now yast, kpackage and rpm all refuse to let me make any changes to my system including removal or re-installation of rpm's. In the process of trying to back up to the previous xfree86 ((suse released jan,2002) something happened and booting to runlevel 5 no longer works. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- the error freported by /var/log/boot.msg <notice>/etc/init.d/rc5.d/S11xfs start Starting X Font Server/usr/X11R6/bin/mkfontdir: bad format for /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype/fonts.scale file /usr/X11R6/bin/mkfontdir: failed to create directory in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype <notice>startproc: execve (/usr/X11R6/bin/xfs) [ /usr/X11R6/bin/xfs -nodaemon -user nobody -port 7100 ], [ PWD=/ BOOT_FILE=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.16w4l HOSTNAME=localhost CONSOLE=/dev/console PREVLEVEL=N AUTOBOOT=YES MACHTYPE=i386-suse-linux LINES=37 SHLVL=2 COLUMNS=100 BOOT_IMAGE=w4l SHELL=/bin/bash HOSTTYPE=i386 OSTYPE=linux HOME=/ TERM=linux PATH=/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin RUNLEVEL=5 INIT_VERSION=sysvinit-2.78 _=/sbin/startproc DAEMON=/usr/X11R6/bin/xfs ] startproc: exit status of parent of /usr/X11R6/bin/xfs: 1 running ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Apparently a font server problem If I try to use yast to re-install the x11*.rpms I get an error "memory alloc failed" (I ran memtest for a couple of hours -1 full pass and had no memmory problems flagged) If I try rpm -Uhv *.i386.rpm I get the same memory alloc error kpackage gives the following error. rpmdepCheck() failed. If I try to install the kernel source (2.4.16-32) it shows a missing dependency as well (lx_suse). this is really odd because it just let me install this source 2 weeks ago. I am totally frustrated, I just want to write really bad things about SuSE Linux right now, but I'd rather get the problem fixed. I think I had a similar problem about 4 or 5 months ago and ended up using the Winders method of solving problems -re-install- I DON'T want to do that again. Looking forward to any help that may be offered. -- dh
