[opensuse] 'e' key not working on keyboard, KDE 4.2.86/OS 11.1
Listmates, I'm having a really weird keyboard problem with the new KDE 4.2.86 (up to date as of 2 hours ago). All my keyboard keys work, but not the 'e' key. When I press that, it does not show on screen. However, Shift+e produces a capital E. On TTY 1-6, the key produces a normal 'e', so I know it is not broken. With previous versions of KDE, this was never a problem. The machine is a HP 6730b laptop and in Keyboard Properties in Yast2, I have selected a Generic 104-key PC keyboard, US layout, euro variant. Again, all keys work, including ~ and such. The lower case 'e' is the only letter I can not type. I'm a bit stumped...can anyone lend me a hand? There is a similar problem with character 'x'. http://forums.opensuse.org/applications/414494-cant-type-character-x- terminal.html Regards Yang Bo -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I've had weird keyboard issues in the past. I normally just reboot. I'm pretty sure you could bring up a console (cntrl-alt-F1 for instance) and switch to init 3 and back to init 5 to fix it. Not the most elegant solution, but not normally the end of the world either. Rebooting did not help. And as I have said, this problem appears only after logging in kde - in KDM and console (ctrl+alt+f1) works just fine, so this is definitely not X.org problem. I'm also using russian keyboard layout, and the corresponding russian letter, located on the 'e' key, also is not typed.

does not look like this issue - I can't type 'e' in any application (qt, gtk or plain X) and as root key is also not typed -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yesterday somebody had a similar problem. He traced it to amarok, i.e. quitting amarok "solved" the issue. Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

This looks rather close - I have logged in as different user (with almost nothing running in autostart) and the problem did not appear. This looke much like some hotkey bug with some app, however, I did try to close almost all running applications (even killed plasma) one by one and the problem did not disappear. Is there any way to track it down - I do not want to delete my ~/.kde4 - too many settings are there I have also reported the issue here: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=193150 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The problem is solved by removing ~/.kde4/share/config/khotkeysrc and logout/login. More details on bugs.kde.org for those who is interested -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Upon updating my home machine, I had the EXACT same problem. Logging in with a new user account, the problem did not exist, so I deduced that it was not my system which was at fault, but my configuration was. I then renamed my .kde4 directory and logged back out and in. Lo and behold, my 'e' was fine again. Then it was just a matter of copying the relevant configuration files back to my new .kde4 directory, and I was up and running again. I wish I had seen your email before that time, though. Would have saved me some hunting for config files. Still, I don't think this should have happened. It is the third or fourth time I had to remove my ~/.kde4 upon updating KDE4 to get things back to a working state. Aggravating....
