[opensuse] Gnome 11.0 - mime types messed up (all plain text) -- update-mime-database errors
Guys, Something has screwed up the mime database in gnome so that now gnome things all documents are "plain text document" mime types. I have tried 'update-mime-database /usr/share/mime' and it returned the following errors: [15:17 alchemy:/usr/share/mime] # update-mime-database /usr/share/mime Unknown media type in type 'all/all' Unknown media type in type 'all/allfiles' Unknown media type in type 'uri/mms' Unknown media type in type 'uri/mmst' Unknown media type in type 'uri/mmsu' Unknown media type in type 'uri/pnm' Unknown media type in type 'uri/rtspt' Unknown media type in type 'uri/rtspu' Unknown media type in type 'fonts/package' Unknown media type in type 'interface/x-winamp-skin' I suspect that the above type don't exist and that is causing the whole mime database update to fail leaving everything set to 'plain text document'. What do I do to fix this? Thanks. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. I've use a GNOME desktop since the Ximian days and never seen this issue. If I run "update-mime-database /usr/share/mime" it completes without error. Did you install any packages, etc... before this broke? [Maybe KDE4 or vlc?] If you update with the "-v" option does it say anything interesting? A quick Bing search finds a couple posts relating this to KDE4 packages. Do you have KDE4 installed? If so try hacking /usr/share/mime/packages/kde.xml and just remove the related stanza from the XML file (or just try renaming the file to somewhere else). -- openSUSE w/GNOME <http://www.opensuse.org/en/> Linux for human beings who need to get work done. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I checked with vuntz (the upstream maintainer of shared-mime-info) and these mime types are indeed invalid wrt. spec, but update-mime-database notices this, outputs the warning and continues, so they should not be responsible for your messed up file type identification. I'll push upstream KDE to put its mimetypes in order, anyway. Thanks for the insight Will, I don't know if it completes successfully or not. Using the verbose option, it looks like it completes, but I don't think it completes successfully because something is totally FUBAR with the gnome mime database. Everything (I mean.. e v e r y t h i n g ) except folders are shown as "plain text document". Have a look at the following two nautilus screenshots: http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/bugs/gnome/all-plain-text-document.jpg http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/bugs/gnome/all-plain-text-document1.jpg Needless to say, trying to launch or preview anything from a filemanager in gnome fails miserably. Right now, everything tries to open as a "Karbon 14" file.... Could you also pass this along to the upstream guys. Thanks. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Will, Just FYI, I went ahead an opened a bug report. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=592834 Hopefully the gnome devs will help us solve the problem. That might help the upstream kde guys decide on the best solution as well. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Will, FYI, the KDE4:Factory share-mime-info package breaks the 11.0 gnome mime database. The problem isn't corrected with update-mime-database /usr/share/mime, but update-mime-database /opt/gnome/share/mime does. I have no idea what the interplay is between the kde4 share-mime-info and the mime db in /opt/gnome/share/mime, but something definitely gets broken. I finally found the solution in the forums: http://forums.opensuse.org/get-help-here/applications/415380-lost-all-gnome-... Maybe the kde4 mime wizards can take a look? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Yes, I have kde4 factory installed. I don't recall when it broke (it's been a month of two). I haven't installed any specific packages that I can relate to breaking the mime database, but I do do regular kde4 updates....
