[opensuse] Switching to USB headset
I recently bought a USB headset to use with my notebook computer. However, even though it is configured properly and tests OK, I cannot get any app to send sound to it. It is configured as "Index 0", in Yast Sound, to make it the default audio device, but I cannot get any app to use it. Any ideas? BTW, in Windows, the audio switches automagically, when I plug it in. tnx jk -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Is pulseaudio enabled and running correctly ? does the system has a different sound output other than the USB headset that is working ? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Pulseaudio is enabled, but what else is there to check? Audio plays normally through the built in speakers. As I mentioned, if I try the test in the sound configuration, I can hear it correctly through the headset. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Install pavucontrol. Launch pavucontrol. Start your audio event (eg test call on Skype). Use pavucontrol to set the output for that application to use your headset. That should clear it up and your headset will work as expected. That did the trick. tnx -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I don't think you need to do anything in *YaST*. I use USB headset and speakers all the time... you just go to your DE's sound-preferences and select the output; PulseAudio does all the mechanics. In GNOME3 / GNOME-Shell this is right-click volume-icon, select "Sound Settings". Look at the "Output" tab. -- Adam Tauno Williams GPG D95ED383 Systems Administrator, Python Developer, LPI / NCLA -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

It was necessary to add the "sound card" in Yast. However, that part of it is quite simple. I then had to add pavucontrol, as mentioned earlier, which enabled me to select the headset for the various applications. I don't see any desktop settings for a sound device. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I am with Adam on this. I use a USB headset all the time and all I do is plug it in. It is "hot" detected and configured. I then change the app that is producing sound to use the headset either in pavucontrol or in kmix (right click and move to device in the context menu - more hidden that pavucontrol). You should not need Yast for a USB sound device. Andrew -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Seconded. You definitely do not need to configure a USB headset in YaST on openSUSE anymore... unless you have specific customization needs. For general use... as stated, plug it in, and use pavucontrol to set application/device. I just checked and the "added" sound card is no longer in Yast. I guess it disappeared when I unplugged the headset. However, it does work as you describe. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Nowdays pretty much everything is dynamic, using an static configuration is not particulary useful unless you have problems with an specific device that needs special parameters. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

A further item: My ThinkPad has 2 USB2 ports and 2 USB3. When I manually configured for the headset, I could only do so for USB2 or USB3 ports, not both. It now works with all 4. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
