[opensuse] Two queries about 11: VMWare 6.5 and an xorg.conf thing
Hello folks! Two queries prior to a second attempt to move from 10.3 to 11: 1. Has any anyone managed to painlessly install VMWare Workstation 6.5 under 11 (i.e. without the gcc version problem that plagued 6.0.x)? (The point of the question is, that unless VMWare 6.5 goes up under 11 without problems, I'll have to stay with 10.3. My system is a production system.) Incidentally, VMWare 6.5 installed like a charm on 10.3, inherited my previous settings and seems to have hidden away all the module compilation someplace. 2. Since SUSE 7 (I think) I have been using a panning screen, effected by adding a line to the appropriate subsections of Section "Screen" in xorg.conf: Virtual 1600 1200 (For SUSE old-timers: You could once upon a time do that through SAX but not any more.) Among other things, it makes working under the Win XP VMWare client tolerable, and pops the eyes out of friends who visit my office ....) Unfortunately, 11 does not seem to honor the virtual statement any more. Again, has anyone else met/solved this problem? For what it's worth, I upgraded 10.3 to 11. Would a fresh install (ugh!) solve the problem? (I can't imagine why, but sometimes the unexpected and illogical work wonders ...) Regards, Daniel

It was no different installing on 11.0 as on 10.3. It cannot find pre-compiled modules for the running kernel, so it has to compile its own. In the process the VMware installer displays the same bug that has been there for a long time.. in cannot correctly identify the GCC version. So... all you have to do is type yes at the question about gcc, and it carries on just fine with defaults all the way (assuming you have installed GCC and the kernel sources of course) There is no need to the any-any patch if you are installing 6.5

It has been stated many times on the mailing list and elsewhere. Upgrades work, but not always. You are almost always better with a clean install. C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well, I've managed to get it work without any command line magic. I used the bundle version, which is a graphical installer for the vmware 6.5. It didn't ask me about compiling anything. Of course, I had an old vmware installation on my system. Maybe the new version just used the kernel modules which the old version had compiled. Even better. I haven't tried the bundle version.... out of long standing habit, I used the RPM version. C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Its a bug in vmware itself, so updating linux doesn't affect it. Just tell the script to ignore the gcc version mismatch it claims to see. In fact, you might see more bugs, like this one: Oct 11 14:26:09 nimrodel kernel: vmmon: module license 'unspecified' taints kernel. Oct 11 14:26:09 nimrodel kernel: Symbol init_mm is marked as UNUSED, however this module is using it. Oct 11 14:26:09 nimrodel kernel: This symbol will go away in the future. Oct 11 14:26:09 nimrodel kernel: Please evalute if this is the right api to use, and if it really is, submit a report the linux kernel mailinglist together with submitting your code for inclusion. Oct 11 14:26:09 nimrodel kernel: /dev/vmmon[12197]: Module vmmon: registered with major=10 minor=165 Oct 11 14:26:09 nimrodel kernel: /dev/vmmon[12197]: Module vmmon: initialized Oct 11 14:26:09 nimrodel kernel: /dev/vmmon[12202]: Module vmmon: unloaded I have yet to update my vmware server to see if this one in particular is solved or not. You system being a production system, you should test it on another machine prior to upgrading.

I very much doubt it. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I installed just fine on openSUSE 11.0. Using the RPM (I didn't care for the Bundle Package while I was doing the beta testing.). RPM Installed just fine (If you have an older version be sure to un-install first). I had no GCC issues. (if mismatch just say yes). You'll be fine. I plan on installing 2.6.27 kernel, i'll let you know if it builds fine on that on 11.0. Just need to make sure NetworkManager will work. If you are not testing on a production system, I don't think you need to think about the "Painlessly". And what's more: In fact, softwares are "Downward Compatible", that means thr is no problem for GCC version is new while the VMware wants an old one. newe while -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
