[opensuse] EliteBook 8460w, openSuSE 11.4 and graphics card driver
I have been given a HP EliteBook 8460w, and I have made it dual boot with openSuSE 11.4 64-bit, but there is no working driver for the graphics card, AMD FirePro M3900 Mobility. I have visited the AMD web site looking for a driver, but they pointed me to HP, who only have drivers for SuSE Linux SLED 11 SP1 (2.6.32.12 Kernel), and having spent time on the phone with HP, they suggested getting back to AMD. Does anyone have any suggestions to get a driver for this graphics card that will run under 11.4. I do believe there are FirePro drivers for Linux, for example i found this phoronix article: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=amd_firepro_q210&num=1 Maybe you need to dig a bit deeper on the AMD website. regular ATI drivers will probably work. # zypper ar -f http://linux.ioda.net/mirror/ati/openSUSE_11.4/ fglrx # zypper in fglrx64_xpic_SUSE114 Reboot and test. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Cristian and Tejas, Thanks for the help/suggestions. I am trying both and will report back success or otherwise. Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I now have a KDE session up and running on the EliteBook 8460w. I tried both the suggestions from Cristian and Tejas, but only managed to get it running using the regular ATI drivers, zypper ar -f http://linux.ioda.net/mirror/ati/openSUSE_11.4/ fglrx zypper in fglrx64_xpic_SUSE114 as suggested by Cristian. I also tried Tejas suggestion, downloading the most recent FirePro driver from AMD, FirePro_8.83.5.4_Linux_119551.zip; after compilation and installation the windows system crashed during startup, and left me at the login prompt. I have matched the screen resolution and refresh rate to that used under Windows 7 and all seems fine at the moment. I do have a 'water mark' logo in the bottom left corner of the screen saying 'AMD unsupported hardware', is this normal? Anyway thanks for the help getting this up and running. That probably means the driver happends to work with your hardware but AMD/ATI hasn't verified its functionality yet. I guess that warning will go away once newer drivers are published, just keep them up to date, newer versions will appear as regular updates.
