I now have a KDE session up and running on the EliteBook 8460w. I tried both the suggestions from Cristian and Tejas, but only managed to get it running using the regular ATI drivers, zypper ar -f http://linux.ioda.net/mirror/ati/openSUSE_11.4/ fglrx zypper in fglrx64_xpic_SUSE114 as suggested by Cristian. I also tried Tejas suggestion, downloading the most recent FirePro driver from AMD, FirePro_8.83.5.4_Linux_119551.zip; after compilation and installation the windows system crashed during startup, and left me at the login prompt. I have matched the screen resolution and refresh rate to that used under Windows 7 and all seems fine at the moment. I do have a 'water mark' logo in the bottom left corner of the screen saying 'AMD unsupported hardware', is this normal? Anyway thanks for the help getting this up and running.
