RE: Re: [SLE] Help with Home Server Upgrade
Hi Keith, Your mileage may vary, but what I did on my home server was use ReiserFS and LVM. The latter lets me treat both drives as a single Logical Volume; the former lets me resize a partition as needed. (The resizing tools are better for Reiser than for Ext2/3.) SuSE 7.3 supports LVM, but it's not well documented. The best documentation can be found out at http://www.sistina.com/lvm_howtos/lvm_howto . NB: the Boot and Root partitions (don't see a need to separate 'em any more) cannot be in the Logical Volume. Shout if you have any questions. What do you recommend? Separate par- tions for /var /usr /home /public? BTW it will be going into a 900 MHz Celeron with /dev/hda = 40 G and /dev/hdb = 30 G. For the sake of safety I could live with the 40 G along, but would like to migrate some of the files over to the extra 30 G drive. Best Regards, Keith B> Tor Sigurdsson <tosi@orku.net> wrote:
Hi,
Use a full dump of mysql, and import the dump into the newer mysql that comes with 7.3. Don't try to use the data files directly between versions, as this _may_ lead to data corruption, and thus a fawlty db.
Personally, I have a tape drive ( 6x autochanger ) and use amanda to take my backups every night. This may be overkill for some tho :)

Hello Lists,
Would like suggestions for server upgrade. Currently have SuSE 7.2 on a dedicated Celeron 466, 256 MB, 40 GB HDD drive partitioned into:
/ - 19.5 G /homes - 5 G /public - 15 G /swap - 500 MB
I am wanting to upgrade to SuSE 7.3 keeping the 40G drive and adding a 30G drive I have lying around. These are IDE/ATAPI drives.
It is easy to preserver the /public and /swap as I plan to do a from scratch of 7.3 Pro. My dilemma is that I have mysql running impor- tant database files under /var/lib/mysql/iboms that I need to preserve and keep permissions. This is also a samba server for several users. Some of these are windows users and need to be kept after upgrade. This is a home net, but the database app using mysql is sorta mission critical. My backup solution will be a newly installed Bru PE 17.0. Prior to this I had used Perfect Backup 6.2 (had 7.0 but it got flaky)
Any suggestions on partitioning, preserving file permissions, making sure I don't hose my mysql files and how others would backup and pursue this task are greatly appreciated. I have used linux now for about 2 yrs, I am a physician by training and not a trained computer professional, but feel fairly comfortable with hardware/software/linux.

Keith B.

There is a PDF on LVM here, done by SuSE: ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/products/servers/linux/lvm_whitepaper.pdf The install and use of Yast2 modules should make LVM quite simple these days BTW, but if you want to dive in on LVM, this Whitepaper will be sure to please. We will have a new version out soon that covers SuSE and Sendmail using the LVM to increase/manage the message store. I will post that here when it is approved.
