I have having some strange sound problems that I hope someone can shed some light on.

Not strange...

I have a SBLive 5.1 Platinum with Live Drive on my PC at home.

Despite the fact that Creative "supports" Linux, the Linux drivers are very "thin" compared to windows. I have the original (non - 5.1) Platinum and just went through what you're going through about a month ago.

Inputs properly connected to it (visually verified!) is a TV card, mic, SCSI DVD/CD drive, and the Live Drive. To summarize the problems discovered during testing:

1.) CD's do not produce sound unless played via alsaplayer

This can't be true. Try using xmms to play cds ^l or Play Location: /cdrom (will be /media/cdrom on new versions). Under prefs ( ^p) set upput to OSS. See if it works. Then set output to aRts. Try it again. On some soundcards both work. On some only one or the other works.

2.) DVD's produce sound with ogle 3.) KDE blips, beeps, startup theme, misc. sounds play fine

Sounds like aRts is the working one then.

4.) TV card does not produce sound (now that I finally have a TV picture thanks to Jaakko Tamminen on this list)

Might need to compunicate with aRts, and might not even know how to :-)

5.) None of the mixers do a dang thing! (tried alsamixer, kmix, xmix) alsaplayer's volume control works for CD's

Not true. I use kmix and gamix. This should at least control main/PCM/CD/Mic/Line-in volume mute/un-mute

6.) Live Drive line-in does not work. Headphone output on Live Drive work for anything that worked with regular speakers

7.) Gameport joystick on sound card does not work. But then again, neither does the motherboard's....

Don't know anything about Joysticks.

I have been looking through the alsa mailing list archives and seeing some problems with SBLive, but nothing quite like this. Most of the information on the web states that the ALSA drivers are the best options for this sound card.

It is, the ALSA drivers have many more features.

Below this message I have pasted parts of my /etc/modules.conf related to sound. Hopefully the problem is there somewhere. If not, would it be best to upgrade the kernel with the latest ALSA drivers?

By downloading the whole passel or tarballs from ALSA'a web site and compiling them. I haven't gotten that far yet because I'm still waiting for a friend to give me my SuSE CDs back so I can install the kernel headers/src You didn't say which version of SuSE you are using. My most recent is 7.2, so I don't know if the following applies to 7.3 or not. [1] The ALSA drivers that came with SuSE Linux =< 7.2 are the "stable" drivers and have basic SBLive functionality. The non-stable drivers have a great many new features, including much improved SBLive support. However they are not stable and so haven't been included in SusE yet, to my knowledge. You will have to download, compile and install them yourself. http://www.alsa-project.org/ I'm going to try the same thing very soon (I hope). Hope you get it working.
