Rehashing an annoying TrueType problem.
Hi everyone, I'm still trying to figure out a very mysterous problem. After removing, and then adding back, the truetype font directory to my XF86Config, no normal X apps can see my tt fonts. The only apps that see my fonts are those using XFT/Render (i.e. QT/KDE apps). This is fine for me most of the time, but it's frustrating as it makes it difficult to use the GIMP. Any ideas? I've been working on this for some time, and David McGlone has made some suggestions too, but I haven't had any success so far. :-( Thanks, Tim -- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. Please, doesn't anyone have a suggestion? I've been trying to solve this problem for months to no avail. Doesn't ANYBODY have a suggestion? <sigh> -Tim On Thursday 02 August 2001 07:36 pm, you wrote:

I couldn't find the previous thread on this, but do you see the tt fonts with xlsfonts? Anders On Friday 03 August 2001 23:21, Timothy R.Butler wrote:

I gave that a try and it only reports the non-TT fonts. It's as if XF86Config is cached somewhere besides /etc/X11/XF86Config and so it doesn't read the up-to-date version that mentions TT fonts again... Thanks, Tim

I don't think it's cached. Are you absolutely certain you've spelled the path correctly? Have you tried re-typing the entry? Sometimes, some editors insert non-printable characters, that confuses the program that tries to read it. Have you looked in the log files to see if X reports why it can't read the directory? Just some ideas for trouble shooting. Anders On Friday 03 August 2001 23:44, Timothy R.Butler wrote:

But why would his KDE2/QT programs see TT fonts, and not his Gnome programs? -Steven On Friday 03 August 2001 05:53 pm, Anders Johansson wrote:

kde handles fonts on its own. Could it be that kfontinst has been used at some point? If so, the fonts would be in kde's config files somewhere, even if they've been removed from XF86Config. Could KDE/QT see the fonts while the entry was removed from XF86Config? Anders On Friday 03 August 2001 23:48, Steven Hatfield wrote:

Anders has a good point, and it actually leads to where my problem originates. KDE (when AA is enabled) draws it's fonts from XFT's configuration rather than XF86Config proper. Having entries in both xftconfig and XF86Config caused KDE 2.1.x to crash I found (not KDE 2.1 though). This problem seems to be resolved because my notebook's copy of KDE 2.2beta1 has entries in both configs and works fine. The real problem came after I needed fonts in GTK again. I tried adding the entry back to XF86Config to no avail. Yesterday I even tried copying the entire font section from a clean XF86Config that David McGlone was kind enough to send. <sigh> Still nothing happened. I'm starting to think it's something else, but it is definately at the X11 level, and not the toolkit level. The funny thing is simply that it can't find the directory that the fonts are in (/usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/truetype). Perhaps I should rebuild my fonts.scale.... -Tim -- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. David McGlone is a genius folks! I got my problem solved! :-D I figured that since KDE could see my fonts, that my fonts.dir must be valid, but apparently XFT/Render doesn't use fonts.dir, and recreating my fonts.dir solved all of my problems. Yahoo!!!! Thank-you a ton David, Steven, and Anders - I'm a very happy penguin now. :-) -Tim -- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R.
