[opensuse] 11.4 Looks Fantastic! But -- CRITICAL X bug for Radeon x1250 cards (scrambled screen)
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Guys, 11.4 looks great! Thank you Ilya for KDE3 - it looks like it will be better than ever once I get past this X bug. NOTE: This is a generic X bug. It affects all desktops. X loads fine, but when the first dialog is closed, the display pixelates (checkerboards) and distorts like the checkerboard is wrapping from top-right to bottom-left around-and-around the screen. (at least 4 wraps around a 1440x900 display) (screenshot grabbed in the blind w/ksnapshot) http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/suse/bugs/114/X/broken.jpg This is bizarre. If you don't touch the display after X starts, everything looks fine. If you do nothing, the screensaver starts and looks fine. If you cancel the screensaver (enter password), you get back to the original desktop just fine. BUT if you close any dialog or open any window on the original display - Wham you get this pixelation. The same thing occurs with TWM, flux, etc.. You can look at the display, but once you open or close the first window - boom! The display scrambles. dmesg and Xorg files: http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/suse/bugs/114/X/dmsg_0308-01.txt http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/suse/bugs/114/X/Xorg.0.log http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/suse/bugs/114/X/Xorg.0.log.old This may NOT just be a SuSE issue! I have seen this on Arch with the newer Xorg as well. (I never followed it up there, I just put my suse 11.0 drive back in the laptop). Also, this does NOT effect nvidia boxes. I have the current Xorg running on nvidia boxes with no problem. (although I have notices an intermittent hiccup in the displays) This may not effect all radeon boxes either, but it does affect the X12xx X13xx series cards (lots of laptops). This install replaced my 11.0 install that has been on this box since it was released. This is my production box and I have to get this solved. For 11.4, it needs to be solved FAST, as I suspect all radeon X12xx and X13xx cards are effected. What to try? I have got to get this fixed ASAP. Thanks. Other Notes on 11.4 The install was from the x86_64 net install .iso and it was completely uneventful. (as it should be) Minor BUG - sntp hangs on boot. I had to disable ntp in System Services to boot after the install. X problem notwithstanding - 11.4 looks awesome! I just can't wait to be able to use it :) - -- David C. My 11.3 laptop with a Radeon 9600 card also locked up 3 times trying to file the bug report. Something isn't right with X... - -- David C.
