[opensuse] HPLIP and HP LaserJet 5 PPD
I have a problem with HPLIP. I tried to install hplip-3.9.8.run and source hplip-3.9.8.tar.gz from the http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html website. It installed after a dependency libgphoto2-devel was installed. I also tried using the YaST installation of the package. After the installation, "sudo hp-setup" did not work. Could someone tell me where the HPLIP.ppd is please. After installing the HPLIP package, my HP LaserJet 5 (with JetDirect) printer does not work any more. The Device URI Model "hp:/usb/Deskjet_F4100_series?serial=-- HP Deskjet F4100 series" works well with the previous PPD. I did not change anything or install it with HPLIP. I need a working PPD for the HP LaserJet 5. The existing ones do not work any more since a recent openSUSE update. I cannot say what changed, but the PPD's for this printer does not work any more. It has worked for years with previous openSUSE and SuSE Linux distros. :-) Al -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Why do you install from source? In repository http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Printing/, you find hplip 3.9.8 ready for openSUSE 11.0, 11.1, SLE_10 and SLE_11 - and Factory, of course ;-) Add the repository to your repo list, and chose to install hplip (your manual installation will not show up in YaST, since it was alongside the rpm system). Next thing is, that YaST and the printer driver sometimes have different ideas how to name the printer. When you are inside YaST, and you do not get a driver shown for your printer, begin deleting the printer's name letter for letter, from rear to front. You'll see that at some point you will have some drivers ready to use. At least that is what happened to my LaserJet 1320 :-) In /usr/share/cups/model/HP I find 4 PPDs for LaserJet_5 on my box... Why do you install from source? On my system they are there as well, but only works now, after I removed the HPLIP installed printers and then using KDE's "system-config-printer 1.0.8" app. Now I have HPLIP installed, but cannot run hp-setup. The error is: sudo hp-setup root's password: error: HPMUDEXT could not be loaded. Doug, I'd advise a total fresh install, but use 11.1...install from the DVD release. The only files you need to save are the ones you have created....photos, anything by OpenOffice, etc. They should be in your /home/? dir. which you DON'T want to format when you do the fresh install. MAKE CERTAIN you do the setup with a "custom" config. for the hard drive(s) so that you don't over-write your /home/? dir. Naturally, do a backup of that dir. BEFORE you do the install. True. Compare my comment on 2009-08-07 at https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/79364 Regarding self-compiling newer HPLIP on an older Linux distribution compare David Suffield's comment on https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/82587 Note that you are on your own when you do this. I'm running hplip-3.9.8-15.pm.27.1 (hr-hm) an get "segmentation fault". But I can use YaST as well as http://localhost:631 to set up my printers. Just changed the packman version to that from the openSUSE build service... Still "segmentation fault". Maybe something with Python, I wouldn't know. But YaST and the CUIPS web interface still work. That file isn't on my system.....have no idea what it is nor why you're getting that error. You can try to install hplip from command line, and as root, using: hp-setup -i It's an interactive install. Also, check to make sure the following are installed....python-devel, libusb, libtool, libcrypto, libnetsnmp-devel, reportlab, sane-devel, scanimage Fred -- "Educate and inform the whole mass of the people... LJ5 is ancient, not that it is bad. Any version of HPLIP on a somewhat recent distribution should work. Besides there's also gimp print that should have a driver for it. I would just use the version of HPLIP from the openSUSE disc. If HPLIP is giving you problems there are alternate drivers you can use that will work just fine.
