[opensuse] WLAN on Thinkpad T61 (with PRO/Wireless 4965 AG) stopped working after upgrade from 11.3 to 11.4
Hi all. After upgrading from openSUSE 11.3 to openSUSE 11.4, I cannot turn on any wireless connection. For example in KDE, the element in the NetworkManager is always ghosted. The kernel module iwlagn is loaded: # lsmod | grep iwl iwlagn 335035 0 iwlcore 152599 1 iwlagn mac80211 266082 2 iwlagn, iwlcore cfg80211 155017 3 iwlagn,iwlcore,mac80211 # uname -a Linux ... 2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-04-25 21:48:33 +0200 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux Any ideas? Thanks, but the following version is already installed: kernel-firmware-2.6.38-1.2.1.src.rpm Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The one you need should be .noarch.rpm. http://widehat.opensuse.org/distribution/11.4/repo/oss/suse/noarch/kernel-fi... Just type: # zypper in kernel-firmware And reboot. Hopefully it works. Also do you mind going to Yast > Network settings and telling me if there's any message about firmware? I submitted a bug against another Wlan adapter that also has the firmware in kernel-firmware package... it should be installed automatically but isn't. I'd like to add notes if that's the case. Sorry. This was a copy and paste error. The right package was installed. If I switch from "NetworkManager" to "traditional ifup" I got WLAN working again.

No message (or is it hidden somewhere?).
I submitted a bug against another Wlan adapter that also has the firmware in kernel-firmware package...
Any links? Ciao Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If you use NetworkManager, and instead of switching to ifup, you do an rcnetwork restart, does WiFi start working? I've had issues with NetworkManager - even up to Factory KDE4, especially if I have NFS Client configured. does WiFi start working?
No. In the nm-applet opened from the Gnome Panel, I see: Wireless Networks wireless is disabled (ghosted; no way to edit this one) Greetings Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
does WiFi start working?
I answered:
No. In the nm-applet opened from the Gnome Panel, I see:
Wireless Networks wireless is disabled (ghosted; no way to edit this one)
And in ~/.xsession-errors, I can see the reason for this: ** (nm-applet:3361): WARNING **: Error enabling/disabling networking: Not authorized to enable/disable networking What is the preferred way to extend authorization as needed? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

if you are collecting info on failed automatic installation of firmware in 11.4, you might want to add the broadcom one, actually you might want to re-examine the whole b43 / bcm43 driver/ firmware thing. i tried to install 11.4 on a test 10g. partition on my dell vostro 1710 (bcm4312 i think), could not get the wifi working, even after a manual firmware install, with and without networkmanager; furthermore, i never saw anything about firmware in the network configuration in yast. The funny thing is that i decided to try the 11.4 install after the live_cd of 11.4 did pop a message about manual firmware install, so i thought that all had been done properly. actually the wifi failed of test installs of 11.1, 11.2, 11.3 and 11.4 on the same partition, the 11.4 twice, once with kde, the second time with gnome. the "standard" os on the laptop is 11.1, when i boot to it the wifi works great with wicd, sometimes with knetworkmanager, but the b43 drivers and fwcutter versions on that install are earlier versions that i can not find in the available discontinued repositories of suse and gwdg any more. as an fyi i also add that a test install (on the same partition) of ubuntu 11.04 with gnome did install the proper firmware and driver all by itself and the wifi works correctly without any messing about, so the correct linux drivers do exist... d. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Try the driver in packman: broadcom-wl. The one that ships with openSUSE doesn't support some chips. -- Med Vennlig Hilsen, A. Helge Joakimsen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
