my webserver and mail server are currently hosted by an off-site isp. the website is very small and currently just redirects to another isp. the mail server hosts about 20 employee email accounts. since we already had roadrunner, (cable broadband), i wanted to cut out the cost of the isp hosting the servers currently. i talked to our sales rep and got my bandwidth doubled as well as a static ip for only 10.00 more a month. i have been working on getting a reliable box ready. i have suse 9.1 running apache2 and openwebmail working...as far as i can test right now....i wonder how i can test more-- such as setting up DNS server and mail server without actually switching the DNS registry yet. also i need a way to move the server to the new ip without losing any user emails. i doubt the current isp would be to cooperative considering he stands to loose money. thanks in advance for any advise,insights,education...etc. don

One possibility is dyndns.org. They offer up to 5 FREE domain names. that way you could set up a domain name such as don.dynalias.com and then have don.dynalias.com point to the static ip. You could set up the mail server and test it by sending mail to don@don.dynalias.com. you can check the webmail functioning by going to https://don.dynalias.com/webmail/ or whatever openwebmail uses. We are basically doing that now. Our web site and email is hosted by the ISP, but we are going to host our own webserver and email server. this lets us test it thoroughly before actually changing the DNS records to point to our new web and email server.
