Dear people, I have been consistently having problems with my net connection and suspect that it's not my ISP. I am able to browse, do FTP downloads, ping www.google.com etc, but KGpg, YOU, Gaim etc simply freeze and timeout on me. I have asked my ISP whether they are disabling any ports. They said none except VoIP which I must ask to be enabled (for free). I wonder if it is the SuSE Firewall. I have enabled the firewall, but perhaps it is working overzealously? Back in Windows, ZoneAlarm used to popup a window for each application that wanted to access the net or act as a server, and when I said Allow all was fine and happy. Now I suspect SuSEFirewall is working and disabling access of apps to the net without asking me. Please tell me what to do? Doesn't SuSEFirewall ask the user like ZoneAlarm? I should, no? I would RT(fine)M but I am not able to use the help center as I requested for help back on Sep 03, 07:33 to which noone has given a solution. :( SuSE 9.3 on a Pentium 4 530 with KDE 3.42, 80 GB HDD, 512 MB RAM. -- (o- Penguin #395953 lives at http://samvit.org //\ subsisting on ancient Indian wisdom ... The following applies to SuSE 9.3 (and perhaps earlier versions but I have 9.3 so can't be sure). Use YaST->Sucurity and users->Firewall to temporarily disable the firewall and see if that fixes the problem. Be sure "Start-Up" is selected on the left and then use the button that says "Stop firewall now". If that fixes your problem, post your file /etc/sysconfig/SuSEfirewall2.

Oho, so that does not fix the problem. So it's probably not a problem with the firewall. What do I do now? Back in Windows too sometimes I used to have this problem, like when Internet Explorer wouldn't download a file at full speed and my download manager would - meaning that all apps don't access the net correctly/properly. I should have said I'm using SuSE 9.3 KDE 3.42 on a P4 530 80 GB 512 MB sys. -- (o- Penguin #395953 lives at http://samvit.org //\ subsisting on ancient Indian wisdom ... Take a look at /var/log/messages for suspicious entries at the time of failure.

Shriramana, That's because you're probably using an Nvidia display. Nvidia uses proprietary routines apart from the kernel hence the kernel is 'tainted'. It isn't tainted in any real way. That's just open source gobbly gook for not being one hundred percent open source. A small price to pay for something that actually works well. ;> By the way, love your tag. Ken

Why the speculation? There's no "probably" about it:
Sep 6 06:57:57 linux kernel: ax25: unsupported module, tainting kernel.
Apparently Shriramana is an amateur radio operator? Or maybe just getting prepared for the next big catastrophe when the hams have the only viable communication.

This has _got_ to be a FAQ. I still get the feeling you're turning to the list as a first resort for every question that pops into your mind. To wit, searching for "Linux Kernel Tainted" (<http://a9.com/Linux%20Kernel%20tainted>) gives this as its first hit: <http://www.tux.org/lkml/>. The "tainted" question is number 18. Randall Schulz
