RE: [S.u.S.E. Linux] Problems with X et al

Now, the start was OK, but when I tried to run the x-windows (startx), I got the following error:
There is no link /var/X11R6/bin/X to /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_xxxx which is the binary of the installed X-server. Please link the files as mentioned above or install the X-server and run xf86config again. I'm aborting now.
you need to configure x with either XF86Setup or xf86config. you can add users through the "useradd" and "passwd" commands, or through user adminisrtation. both user administration and X setup are achieved through yast. just type "yast" and follow the appropriate paths.
Did that with XF86Setup, didn't work... then I tried Xf86config, and it typed the X link to my /var/X11R6/bin, but keep getting an err: The file XF86_xxxx(binary of X-server) doesn't seem to be a binary file. Please check it or/and install a new X-server-binary. I'm aborting now. Tried once and again, changed configurations, installed servers,... nothing as yet. Any idea anyone? Thank you. What type of video card and monitor do you have? Specificsare required here, especially with the monitor (you did get a book with your monitor?) since you can fry your monitor by blindly putting the wrong settings in X. If you posted this info before, I missed it. Dana -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

This has happened to me too. Cured it by simply typing: ln -s /usr/X11R6/bin/X /var/X11R6/bin/XF86_P9000 Whoops -- typed in my own server without thinking! You may have to first erase X. In my experience neither running yast nor reinstalling the server helps. Of course you must have a usable XF86Config file. ---------------------------------- E-Mail: bob gordon <bob100@ibm.net> Date: 16-May-98 Time: 00:01:08 This message was sent by XFMail ---------------------------------- -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
I want to amend the way YaST adds users: When YaST is finished, I want it to automatically su user and create a .qmail and a Maildir in the user's home directory. Is this possible?
This should be possible, if it does not contain any user-dependent data. Just create the relevant directories and files in the directory /etc/skel, which is used as a template for future user homedirectories. When YaST adds a new user it copies the contents of /etc/skel to the new users homedir. So you can simply add .qmail and the Maildir to /etc/skel. Ciao, Stefan -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

If you press F1 in the user administration mask, you get this info: The script /usr/sbin/useradd.local is executed after a user is created if this script exists. This is the place to put system specific actions after creation of users. A The script /usr/sbin/userdel.local is executed after a user is deleted if this script exists. This is the place to put system specific actions needed to remove an user. The user is only removed if this script has an return value of 0. So you can do everything you want, inside this script... :) Ciao, BB -- Bodo Bauer S.u.S.E., LLC fon +1-510-835 7873 bb@suse.de 458 Santa Clara Avenue fax +1-510-835 7875 <A HREF="http://www.suse.com"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com</A">http://www.suse.com</A</A>> Oakland CA, 94610 USA -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
