[opensuse] sax2 nvidia problem
Hi Folks, I'm trying to install 11.0/KDE3.5 on a new Toshiba Satellite X205-SLi6 laptop. Things went fairly smoothly, I downloaded and installed the first round of on-line updates. But then I tried to install the proprietary nvidia driver for the embedded NVidia GeForce 8600M GT. The module compile and install seems to go well, but when I "sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia" I get the following: SaX: ups lost card during probing... abort SaX: something went wrong while X was called with -probeonly SaX: try to call 'sax2 -p' and select a single device ? When I run sax2 -p I get: Chip: 0 is -> Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT 09:00:0 0x10de 0x0407 AGP nv Chip: 1 is -> Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT 10:00:0 0x10de 0x0407 AGP nv This seems rather odd, there's only one graphics subsystem, I think. The BIOS is totally mute on the subject. I tried both the current and beta Nvidia drivers, 173.14.12 and 177.67, but both behave the same. I've never seen this behavior before, has anyone else? Any suggestions? Regards, Lew -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I've never had any success with sax and nvidia, you should use /usr/bin/nvidia-settings to configure the card. Regards Dave P -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Dave, Thanks for the suggestion. I don't have time to try it right now, will give it a rip tonight. However, this issue affects other yast2 modules too. For example, the "Keyboard Layout" module also calls sax2 and thusly crashes. If your suggestion doesn't work, and if no others come in, I'll try installing 10.3 just to make sure it's not a 11.0 problem. Hi Dave, I tried nvidia-settings and noticed that it too thought there are two GPU's. Maybe there are two? At any rate, I fiddled around with Sax2 some more and finally got the following to work: sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia -c 1 This selects chip "1", which is the one nvidia-settings said was the active. Now, sax2 when invoked from yast also works. Interesting, I guess this Satellite actually has two GPU's. Now I wonder if the second is available for general use? Some cards do have dual gpu's if you install the latest driver for your card from http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us and install it, it should use both gpus. Unfortunatly I can't speak from experience but they also claim to support sli under linux. I have a thinkpad with an nvidia card which will did not configure out of the box. Her'e what I did: -boot to runlevel 3 -install the proprietary nvidia driver. Do not elect to run sax2. -run: sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia -set up your monitor etc. -do not "test" the configuration, just save it. -Make a copy of xorg.conf. -as root do a startx to see if it works. you can use the "Nvidia X Server Settings" applet (System -> More Programs) to make fine adjustments. save them. If all is well you should be able t boot to runlevel 5 and logon via your display manager. Just for good measure, my xorg.conf is attached. wcn Lew Wolfgang wrote:
