Re: [opensuse] Realtek 8168
I read online that it didn't work without compiling the driver. This is on the opensuse site which says that. http://en.opensuse.org/HCL/Network_Adapters_%28Wired%29 Any idea if there are plans to get it working? My ALSA is kinda acting weird too but that's a diff story. Hey, do you know what the repositories are to install the smp kernel source? Also, how to get mp3 playback with xine engine work? It keeps telling me that it doesn't have codecs for universal types like mp3 or mpeg. Thanks all. On Sun Nov 26 19:19 , Boyd Lynn Gerber sent:

So I finally figured out my problem, SuSE doesn't support Realtek 8168 drivers in the kernel. It listed 10.0 as not working, does anyone know if there are any plans to make it work in future developments such as 10.2 or maybe 10.3? Does anyone know how to install the drivers (I keep getting errors)? Is there a way to get it working.
I am running a Reaoteck 8169 without any problems. I am not sure what the difference is between an 8168 and an 8169.
If for whatever reason I can't get it working, does anyone know a decent PCMCIA wired ethernet card that works on OpenSuSE 10.1 remastered? I am looking at this Linksys one and since my other Linksys cards have worked on almost every linux distro I have, I assume that it will on the SUSE, I just want to be sure before I make any purchases. I am running various Linksys PCMCIA cards without any problems. Also various 3-Com PCMCIA cards.

You can, as the HCL states, download a driver from Realtek's site. It now lists 1.0.5 which will compile on SUSE (I've been using a beta of 1.0.5 since I reported the compilation failure to Realtek). The problem is that it causes full system lock-ups on my machine, so I actually use a Netgear FA511 PCMCIA card. I'm trying the release version as a quick diff shows it's not just a renumbered version of the beta. I'll report back. In the meantime if you want to get it download if from here[1] and note that 'Site 1' doesn't have it yet - I used 'Site 3'. Well, I can happily report that, after nearly six hours of use, including very heavy traffic it hasn't locked up so it seems to Work For Me[TM] on Factory/i586; YMMV as always. Now, as for why it's not included in openSUSE, there is a license question mark. No license (GPL or otherwise) is included in the tarball and the only clue is line 98 of r1000_n.c that reads: MODULE_LICENSE("GPL"); I've asked Realtek the question of the license and received no response. -- James Ogley james@usr-local-bin.org http://usr-local-bin.org GNOME for openSUSE: http://repos.opensuse.org/GNOME:/ Help end poverty: http://oxfam.org.uk/in -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Other posts assist with the above.

Novell does not ship all the codecs and files because of the patents on mp3. I use packman. http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_YaST_Package_Repositories Use a mirror. Toget what you need. If you search the archives you can find articles that explain exactly what you need. I do not remember the URL. Basically you need the additional libraries and codex. You can also search on packman mailing list. I think it is there as well. -- Boyd Gerber <gerberb@zenez.com> ZENEZ 1042 East Fort Union #135, Midvale Utah 84047 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
